Hi. I’m a senior applying to (in order of preference):

I know that’s a lot of schools, but I really am not sure of where I can get in. After doing VERY thorough college research, I think I’ve picked the schools that would benefit me best. I was just wondering what my chances are for admission to these schools.

I am a half Mexican and half Puerto Rican male. I have no legacy at any of the schools I am applying to, but both of my parents went to college. I am applying regular decision to all of my schools. I plan on majoring in either biochemistry and molecular biology or chemistry, with plans to pursue a PhD/MD program. I attend a large, public, very competitive school (recently ranked 3rd best public school in the region, and 25th best school overall http://east.cherryhill.k12.nj.us/docs/EASTprofile05.pdf is a link to the school’s profile) in an affluent southern New Jersey town.

Both of my parents were sick with cancer during my sophomore and junior years. While I don’t feel like this had anything to do with my grades slipping (though others say it did), it did place a great deal of responsibility and stress on my shoulders, and my guidance counselor finds this worth mentioning in her recommendation.

Thanks for letting me know what my chances are.

I'm new to this forum. I probably shouldn't have put all that info. I know nobody wants to read it. If someone can just give it a look and evaluation, I'd appreciate it.

Wow, I live like 20 minutes from Cherry Hill, I go to the Cherry Hill Mall like once a month.. heh.. I was about to move to Cherry Hill, but my parents changed their mind.

but what do u think of my chances at these schools?

They are all very good schools (your top choices), BUT your ethnicity may help.

Wesleyan and Vassar are high reaches with your stats.

helooooooooooooooooooooooo

i dont want to dwell on this at all, but i get conflicting reports of where i can get in. does anyone know exactly how much being hispanic can help in getting in. i feel like i'm abusing something that i couldn't control being born into, but i guess if it helps get into the schools i really want to go to, then its ok? i mean, there are much worse things out there (did anyone see that 20/20 last night). i was just wondering if there is a lower range of sats and grades for URM's, or am i wasting my time applying to schools like wesleyan, vassar, etc.

Wesleyan University: Slight Reach

Vassar College: High Match

Haverford College: High Match

Middlebury College: Slight Reach

Bowdoin College: Slight Reach

Brown University: Reach

Dartmouth College: Reach

Vanderbilt University: Slight Reach

University of Rochester; Match

University of Richmond: Safe MAtch

Lafayette College: Match

Dickinson College: Safe Match

TCNJ: Safety

thanks for the input

Slipper is being optimisitic. Although your ethnicity will help somewhat, your SAT is below the range for almost every single one of your schools. While this will not necessarily break you, other aspects of your app will not account for this deficiency. You say your SAT IIs are bad, so those are out. Your ECs are decent but not outstanding (congrats on the latin awards though). I just think you need to aim lower than the Top 20 Universities and the Top 10 LACs in the nation. You have 2 or 3 solid matches/safeties though.

Wesleyan University-- reach

Vassar College-- reach

Haverford College-- reach

Middlebury College-- reach

Bowdoin College-- not sure

Brown University-- big reach

Dartmouth College-- big reach

Vanderbilt University-- reach

University of Rochester-- slight reach

University of Richmond-- high match

bowdoin would be nice ...dont send them ur SATs, they dont require it

bearcats, if I don’t send bowdoin my sats, wouldn’t they look harder at my grades, or other factors. My sats are not bad, and for Hispanics, they might be pretty good.

bumpity bump. bump bump bump.

I'm optimistic for you :)
How many half Mexican/half Puerto Rican males are out there? Not many.
How many of them score over 2000 on the SAT? Even less.
How many of them are applying to LACs? Only you, probably.
AND your parents are cancer survivors. AND you have a lot of ECs, three of which you've done all four years.

I wouldn't be surprised if you got into at least half of those colleges. Good luck!

bump bump?

anybody else?

anybody else????

pathetic bumpage

with so many conflicting opinions i don't know what to believe. people seem to be saying "you suck, you're going nowhere" or "you're hispanic, you can go anywhere." neither of which i believe are true. can someone give me an opinion based on something valid.

hey everybody! (bump)
