What are my chances of getting into a DPT program?

I am a neuroscience major in my sophomore year at the University of Minnesota. I had a tough first year taking far too many classes at a sophmore level. My grade point right now is only a 2.9, but after this semester I should be at a 3.0. Unfortunately 2 of my C grades my freshman year were in Chemistry, the other 2 were in Physics and Calc. II. As long as I keep the minimum 3.0 gpa do I have a chance to get into a DPT program? Also, what classes do I include in the science gpa, or I guess some schools ask for a separate gpa in required classes. Any advice or information is greatly appreciated.

When I received my PT degree, the entry level degree required was a masters. At the time, there were far fewer entry level masters programs than there are entry level DPT programs now. I expect, however, that competition is still high. My master program had over 6,000 applicants for 28 spots (and unlike UG, schools did not over-enroll; they did, however, use a wait list to fill any spots that opened up).

I did a quick search in the web for current prerequisites - the programs vary to some extent, but all are very clear as to which classes are required and which to include in your science GPA. The good news is that applicants needs a minimum of a 3.0 GPA for most programs and you are well on your way to that. Most schools that I perused are also looking for at least a 3.0 science GPA with at least a C in every class. If you retake a class to receive a higher grade, some schools average the 2 grades together while others allow you to replace the lower grade with the higher grade.

In my experience, graduate PT programs are pretty holistic in their approach to admissions. They are obviously looking for students that can handle the demanding 3 - 3 1/2 year curriculum but also for certain personality traits and a passion for the profession. That said, with the level of competition, a higher GPA is always better. When I applied, my GPA was 3.5 (I don’t recall my science GPA but it was at least that) and I was accepted to 3 programs, waitlisted at 1, and rejected from 1.

Good luck and feel free to PM me if I can be of any further help.
