Other Info:
I live in nebraska and I have a very rare and chronic illness, which was very severe freshman year (I was in and out of the hospital for months and I wasn’t able to attend school for most of freshman year). I still suffer some symptoms but they are much less severe and I have occasional doctor visits.
I have learned from this experience to benefit others. I have helped to develop an app to help teenagers with chronic illnesses, I lead support group meetings for kids with illnesses similar to mine, I donate toys to children at a local hospital a few times a year, I also have a website to promote healthy living in my community.
Extracurriculars and Achievements:
I am the president of multiple clubs including Mu Alpha Theta and Science Bowl.
I do a lot of comepetitive math (selected in top 50 in the state for math)
I have published a paper in a medical magazine.
I am an eagle Scout
I have a bunch of other volunteer activities and leadership out side of school.
I work a lot with the mayor in a bunch of service projects.
I have done multiple internships at hospitals
What do you think my chances are of getting into a good ivy league school? Also if you have any recommendations for which school i should early apply to, it would be appreciated!
No one here can tell you your chances. What is your intended major? Have you discussed the cost of college with your parents?
Also, urban or rural? What area of the USA?
I plan on going into the medical field, so maybe a biochem major. I live in an urban area. And yes, cost is not a major issue as of right now for my family
Just want to know if my application is strong enough to maybe get into an ivy league
You have a pretty decent shot though your UW GPA is low (W GPA seems pretty good though). Your ECs are pretty decent (the publication will help), so I’d say you have a pretty decent shot at “top colleges”. As for ivy leagues, why do you want to go there? If the answer has something to do with prestige, you should rethink your priorities…
I just wanna know right now if I have a shot of getting into the ivy’s.
Also a few things I left out:
Speech and debate Captain
3 time AIME qualifier
USACO silver medalist
MathCON gold medalist
Student Council member
800 on math 2 subject test
Any recommendations to where I should Early apply?
The Ivies and similar schools are reaches for everyone. You are qualified but most qualified applicants are rejected. That is all anyone can say.
You have a shot at getting in, but they are still reaches. And that is the honest and blunt response you requested.
Do you think I should Early apply to like Harvard or Yale or Stanford, or should I Early another school like Rice or Vanderbilt or Duke
Any early recommendations?
Also if you think these schools are too reach for me, what about some lower tier schools like Rice or Vanderbilt or Duke?
Honestly, your application looks pretty solid. AS long as nothing on here is boasted or anything, and you write good essays (especially about how that trial with the illness effected your outlook on life) then you should be golden going forward. Goodluck!
I would like to reassure you that your low UW GPA will not drastically decrease your chances to Ivy Leagues since your test scores and ECs outstanding enough that they overshadow your GPA. Your ECs are particularly impressive and are focused in the STEM/medicine area, which is really good so I think you have great chances for Ivy Leagues. Also, if you are still worried about your GPA, you have a good excuse (illness) that you can talk about in the additional info section of common app (to explain the low GPA). Good luck! I would appreciate it if you could chance me back here since I am in a similar situation as well with a low UW GPA: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1995754-chance-me-low-gpa-rank-cornell-rice-wash-u-ucla-etc-p1.html Thanks!
Thanks for the great feedback!! My dream school is either Harvard or Stanford, so where would you recommend I should early apply? I plan on going on the Pre-med track as well. I just read your chance me and now feel really dumb lol, you defintely have a very great chance of getting into ivy leagues!!
You will get into some of these schools (but with the Ivies, nobody is a shoo in)
So where should I Early apply??
Why are you asking the internet that? ED isn’t supposed to be a gimmick to increase acceptance chances. It’s a binding commitment for people who know exactly where they want to go. You need to visit and see where you fit. Or possibly work with a college counselor who has visited a number of these places and will help you figure out where you might be happy.
I want to go the best college I can get into, but I don’t want to Early a school I would have no chance of getting into. This the only forum in which I can talk to people about this.
You have wonderful credentials, but you need to apply to safeties. There are other wonderful, non-Ivy colleges!
So should I Early apply to duke? And is harvard too much of a reach?
