Hey

I am an eighth grader applying for the ninth grade. I got 98th percentage on my SSAT and 116 on my TOEFL. My grades in the seventh grade were not that good, though, and the prospect of it destroying my chances is driving me crazy!

I placed sixth in a national speech contest and did well in the AMC.
I've also won a number of smaller awards in district contests.
I am pretty active and play a lot of sports.
I was captain of the soccer team and was in the volleyball team as well as the track team.
I play the flute and have been an active part of several choirs performing nation wide.
I was also in the Mock International Court and the Latin Dance club in my school.
I haven't done a lot charity work, though, because I haven't really gotten the chance to.
I am thinking about helping out (basically interning) in a company for their expo, but I'm not really sure if I should do it.

I am crazy nervous for my interview and I am totally at loss! What should I say?
I am looking for a lot of honest opinions, and would love to hear from those of you who got into Andovers!

Thank you!

First of all, get the name of the school right. It’s Andover, not Andovers. Second, there are piles and piles of opinions on this site about what it takes to be admitted into Andover and other top boarding schools. And lastly, pretty much every kid who attends this school (and any of the other top 15 in the nation) has a track record and scores like yours or better. There is no secret sauce here. Many variables are not in your control.

What you CAN control is your willingness to choose a range of schools to which you should apply, from those with admit rates in the 40’s to those with sub 15% admit rates. And what you CAN control is your mindset. Don’t get married to any one school emotionally until you have actual admission offers in your hands.

“I am crazy nervous for my interview and I am totally at loss! What should I say?”

I can definitely tell you one word NOT to say:

Andovers

First, this question belongs on the Chances board.
Second, to answer your question, if your 7th grade grades were not that good, (whatever that means) you can forget getting into Andover. Sorry

By Andover, I think she refers to the two Phillips brothers. I don’t recommend her to go to Exeter and ask about how she wants to get in to Andover #2 ;)
