Your unweighted GPA is low for UCB. Average UW is around 3.9, so this can be a huge issue. Also the UC’s calculate a UC GPA based on 10-11th grades only. The calculator link is for the capped UC GPA with only 8 semesters of honors points for AP/IB or DE courses taken in 10-11th grade. As an OOS applicant, honors designated courses are not given the extra points: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
UCB will also use the uncapped UC GPA with honors points will be given for more than the 8 semester cap.
You have a nice list of EC’s but what about test scores? UCB like all the UC’s use 14 different criteria to review applications, so decisions are not only based on your stats but essays and EC’s, however, having a competitive GPA is very important to the UC’s so you are lacking in that department.
Here is the Freshman Profile for 2015. Compare your stats to the admitted students to see what kind of chance you may have. Good Luck.
One last thing I would like to point out is that OOS applicants cannot expect any financial aid for UCB or any other UC, so expect to pay around $55K/year for the privilege to attend.
My current/only ACT score is 27, although I plan to take it again next weekend. My GPA is pretty rough I tend to get s Bs although my course schedule is very rigorous. I would cut down on the ECs, but I honestly enjoy all of them. Thanks for the resources!
An unweighted GPA of 3.0 probably means a UC-weighted GPA or 3.3 to 3.4 if you took at least 2 year long AP courses during each of 10th and 11th grades. If you are not a California resident, you need at least a 3.4 GPA to even be eligible for admission to a UC campus. Even if you are a California resident, only 1% of those below 3.4 GPA were admitted to UCB, and these were probably extremely unusual situations.
If you are not a California resident, it will also be expensive.
I’m sorry, but your chances at Cal are very slim. Unfortunately, UCs are VERY GPA focused. I applied with a 3.5 UC GPA and was rejected by D, I, SD, LA, and Cal, despite my 99th percentile SAT score, unique ECs, and decent essays. I’d try looking at some CSUs and private schools in the region. Good luck, and PM me if you’d like more advice!
@UChicagoGirl I’m not sure if you’re in-state or out of state, but out of state applicants are required to have a 3.4+ UC GPA in order to be considered for admission. You need to calculate your grades and find out if you’re eligible in the first place.
To be completely honest though, I don’t think Berkeley has ever or will ever admit someone with a 3.0/27. I’d say your chances are extremely slim even if you got a 35 on the ACT due to the fact that the UC’s are extremely fixated on grades. If you’re in-state you should check out some CSUs.
