Hi everyone! So right now I’m currently a junior and although admissions processes haven’t started yet, I know that Binghamton is the school that I really want to go to. I have double legacy there and I just love everything about it. I don’t know about my chances though.
Freshman year: 0 APs, Honors English, History, and Spanish. All As and Bs but one C+ in geometry.
Sophomore year: 0 APs: Honors English, History, and Spanish mostly As but a D+ in chemistry which tanked my GPA (that’s my problem.)
Junior year so far: 3 APs, English History and Spanish. So far I’m doing alright-nothing to rave about but its only September.
ACT: I only took it once and I’m retaking it. I got a composite score of 22 (I know its bad) I’m taking the SAT this Saturday, and hopefully that goes better.
GPA: Weighted it’s a 3.53 which I know is really bad. Chemistry really killed it.
Ecs: Model UN (3 awards if those count) FBLA (one award) USY, on the chapter board, and Mock Trial. I submitted my application for Social Studies Honors Society and Spanish Honors Society too.
Volunteer: I volunteered at a preschool.
As I’ve said before, I also have double legacy. So…what are my chances? Thanks!
I think you should work on getting your ACT/SAT score up, as well as your GPA. Unless you are HEOP, that score is way too low. My S17 had a 27 ACT and a 3.48 and he didn’t even bother applying to Bing, although that was in some part because it didn’t offer the major/program he wanted. There are plenty of other SUNY schools that you can get into. I don’t believe that SUNY schools, in general, pay too much attention to legacy status and they are generally very stats driven, although it can depend on the particular major you are looking at. If Bing offers what you want, go for it, but based on my experience as the mother of 5 SUNY students (none of whom applied to Bing, for various reasons), I would widen my net.
Good luck.
If you really want to go to Binghamton I would consider focusing on your test scores. Try taking the SAT and if that does not improve, I would retake the ACT and try to superscore since you can at Bing. Also, it’s true they don’t pay much attention to legacy, they care more if youre equipped to handle the difficulty of classes offered. So my biggest piece of advice is to challenge yourself, try to get your GPA up and improve on test scores. Showing improvement and challenging coursework is very impressive. Also try applying to the College of Community and Public Affairs if you’re very interested in Binghamton, it could be your best bet to get into Bing since it is a much easier school to get into than Harpur college of liberal arts (just a tip)
