What are my chances of getting into Brown?

Hi, I'm going to be a junior in high school from September.

I was originally born here in the US, but I lived in Australia for 5 years, and then I came back to the US just in time for my freshman year in high school.

I'm also bilingual in Japanese and English. As for my level in Japanese, I was able to score a 5 of the Japanese AP without any studying, and I can speak, read, and write better than the average Japanese child in Japan. As for English, I'm at a much higher level.

I have also been playing the piano for 12 years, and have won various awards and honors at competitions and performances.

Though since the education system in Australia was very different from the one in the US, I am having a very hard time keeping my grades to a straight A. Unfortunately, I got 6 B's my freshman year and 3 B's my sophomore year.

Even with those unfortunate grades, I scored top 1% in the nation for the PLAN (preliminary ACT) and I am taking the heaviest course load available at my school. Right now I'm preparing for the PSAT in October.

As for extracurriculars, I'm in the school band. I got the position of Uniform Manager my sophomore year, and for my junior year, I earned the positions of Woodwind Captain (usually only seniors get this position) and Head Uniform Manager.

I know that my grades are not optimal for an Ivy league school, but will these other factors gain me a more favorable position?

Without your cumulative GPA and SAT/ACT scores, it’s a little difficult to tell. Based on what you’ve stated so far, your chances look good, but remember that it’s the standardized tests and GPA, and some would argue the essay, too, that really make or break your application and chance.

I’m not very sure of my GPA as of now because my school weights particular courses, but my SAT score is around 2200 and according to the PLAN, my estimated ACT range is from a 28 to a 33.
Is the National Merit Scholarship an important factor in the admissions process?

It sounds to me as if you have a shot at it. Of course, these schools have far more great candidates than they can take, but you seem in the range, so I don’t think you’re wasting your time by trying.
