I know I dont have a good chance of getting into BYU but I was wondering if anyone thinks I have any chance of getting in?
GPA: Unweighted 3.2
Sat: 1110 and 1080
Act: 24
non lds
from Mass
I go to an exam school (you have to take a test to get into the school and its much harder than most schools, high ranking)
I do dance, cheer, community service at my church, apart of newspaper, art club, do softball in summer, had two summer jobs in my 4 years of high school
I made the priority deadline
I also already got into the dance major there
I know my chances are very slim, but Im just wondering if anyone thinks there is still a chance I could get in?
Your stats would be well below average unless you played football. BYU provo is not a school one picks on a whim because it is cheap. It is an overwhelmingly religious school with religious classes and a strict honor code in an overwhelmingly LDS community even by SL area standards. How did you even get to apply?
Anyone can apply to BYU regardless of religion… I know how relgious the school is and the environment does not bother me. My mom is also LDS and went to BYU for a year. I dont care if its cheap or not I just like the school, atmosphere, honor code, and dance program.
Hi,I am an international student , my stats are :
-GPA : 3.6
-SAT : 1310 (M + CR) and 1890/2400 (superscored)
-Have city’s , regional and national prize in Biology
-Some Ecs
-Non LDS
What are my chances to be amitted?
Thank you in advance.
I’m sorry, but BYU Admissions have a reputation of being very stats-oriented. They don’t often look past the numbers to see EC’s and essays unless you’re on “the bubble” with your scores and GPA. Your chances aren’t looking very good right now. However, BYU Idaho is a great school that is less stats-oriented, and Utah State is a great school that is less selective with a similar student culture, as far as I’ve heard. I would recommend adding those to your list. Best of luck!
I hope so…according to the website the acceptance rate for international freshman in 2015 is only 39,4% with the average GPA : 3,65 ( a little bit higher than mine, more info : in my country, the scale is not 4.0 but 10.0 . I got :
Grade : 9th :9.2 10th: 8.9. 11th : 9.0 12th : 9.1
I am a gap year applicant so I also have score in grade 12th )
But I have better SAT score than the average .
Although not a LDS, I do charity quite often ( 3 years high school , but without certifications-the place I do charity doesnt have such things like certifications…)
Do you have any tips to enhance my application ? ( about essays or anything else )
@Shindly your chances look decent. Try to bring out your service experiences in your essays to highlight your character strength. How much higher than average is your SAT score? If it is significantly higher, then your GPA won’t matter much. If it is not much higher, you would do well to focus on writing stellar essays and portraying your EC’s in the best light, because they will be looking closely at them.
@Studious99 so your former comment is for thr OP, right?
My SAT is 1310 and the average is 1290 ( it is really just a small difference).
And do you know about evaluation for CES school? Since I study at a non-religous school,do I need to do something with my transcript or just send it directly to BYU?
@paoloppd Thank you. I am doing my application now. It is so much more complicated for international student…
And about the documents, do you send your academic awards and prizes ? I got city 's ,regional and national prizes in Biology. Should I send it to WES / IERF to evaluate or just translate and send directly to BYU ? I dont see they mention about these things on WES websites or BYU websites…
@Shindly Regarding scores, I was the opposite; did well in ACT/SAT exams but didn’t do well with school grades.
My pre-college school did not use the GPA system, but I got exactly the bare minimum to be allowed to even apply.
ACT: 32 (no essay); SAT: 1460/1600, 2050/2400;
ECs: Mainly scouting activities, which might have helped since the church is very heavily into scouting.
Don’t know if my non-LDS status affected my application postively or negatively, if at all (if you ask them of course they will say it doesn’t matter, but who knows). Also, this was four years ago, and admission standards can easily change based on demand.
One thing I’ve heard, but cannot confirm is true, is that it’s toughest to get in if you apply to start in Fall, and it’s easier to get in if you start in Winter semester (January) or Spring (April).
@Unaffiliated
Your standardized scores are stellar ! I wish I had more time to prepare but I only got 1 month… I made the decision to study abroad quite late and I cannot postpone to next year since I graduated already in June 2015 ( gap 2 years is too long for me ) . My stats is too average … Both GPA and SAT score is about equal to the entrance average plus I dont have 4 years seminary graduation, which is a disadvantage for me. Do you know any non LDS have less or equal stats as mine ?
@Unaffiliated the rumor about fall term vs. winter and spring term is a myth. I have heard CES speakers and tour guides dispel it multiple times. Also, anecdotally, a relative who is not LDS got into BYU, if that helps. Being international probably doesn’t help though. BYU Hawaii is aimed at internationals, especially from the Pacific area or Asia.
@Shindly Well, my “GPA” would have put me at the absolute bottom of the pack, so I think your GPA/SAT combination is about comparable to, if not better than mine.
I don’t have any personal anecdotal data on non-LDS students (there weren’t many of us, and stats isn’t something we talked about), but I know several non-LDS international students who transferred in. If they don’t get in first time they go to community college or one of the BYU affiliates (Hawaii, Idaho, LDS Business College) for a year or two and then transfer. With your stats, you can probably look at better schools to go to first.
