What are my chances of getting into BYU

Hi @paoloppd . Sorry to ask you this suddenly but you seem to be very well informed of BYU’s admission process. Can I get an opinion on my chances to attend?
Hi all!
First off I would like to say thanks for taking the time to read and give me my chances on getting into BYU! Please don’t be afraid to be realistic, and don’t pull any punches. Thanks everyone!

So I am a senior this year and plan on applying to BYU twice. One for early decision and one for regular. I am asian and am not a member of the LDS church however I am converting after I met some missionaries and am not sure if I should register myself as LDS or not. Additionally, I am a US citizen and speak two languages, English and Korean. Spanish I speak and write enough to get by when I go to Mexico. I also live in San Diego, California so I will be applying out of state. I wish to be a dentist, and I want to go to BYU since it is a dental feeder school with a great pre-dental focus.

As for my stats, here you go:

Unweighted GPA: 3.0513(4 years)

Weighted GPA:3.3077(4 years)

SAT(2400): 2250
SAT(CR + M): 1450

Physics C: E & M.

Notable Achievements:

Thanks all and I really appreciate any feedback I can get for BYU. Also, I am up for advice so please comment as much advice as possible! And yes I know about the behavior and dress policy for BYU(I want to go for that reason as well) so thank you so much everyone!

BYU Hopeful,

I would give you a 50/50 chance of getting in.

Your low GPA (low for BYU at least) will definitely hurt you, and BYU could easily choose to pass over you for a 2100/3.8 student.

However, your ECs and test scores are very strong. I hate to say this, but I believe that being a convert will also give you a better chance. Make sure to mention that in your essays.

How do you intend to apply to BYU twice? I don’t think that’s allowed, is it?

Good luck with everything! I would say that you are definitely a strong applicant in general could probably get into a better ranked college than BYU just due to the undue emphasis BYU puts on GPA.

Thanks! I’ll take that into account and make sure to write about that in my essay

BYU always says they never discourage anyone from applying, but your GPA is below their average. Here are the stats for the current freshman class: https://admissions.byu.edu/entrance-averages
That said, they do take a holistic approach. If you are not yet baptized, then you say you are not LDS on your application. Being a member does not factor into admissions, however, those who have been members a long time and didn’t take advantage of youth seminary may find it more difficult to get in. You should also consider BYUIdaho, which is more flexible in terms of GPA as far as admissions go. If you decide to start elsewhere and transfer to the Y, keep in mind that the college GPA requirement to transfer is super high. But if you are like me, I had high test scores but lower (3.5ish) GPA in high school, but blossomed and found my groove in college. You can do it. They don’t have early decision and late decision. Their early deadline just grants you earlier picks for housing. Those who apply early and regular all have to wait til mid to late February to hear final decisions (for fall admission, anyway). Good luck!

@ BYUHopeful You should also see if any of the BeSmart firesides will be in your area and definitely check one out if you can. They discuss the requirements and options of all the church schools, as well as the Institute program available near every college campus in the U.S. https://admissions.byu.edu/besmart-fireside There was actually one in San Diego LAST night, :frowning: but there is another one in Rancho Cucamonga tonight if you don’t mind a drive.

hi I am applying to BYU as an international transfer student. I am in a four year college and almost finish my freshman year. My GPA is 3.76 and I got a 7.0 on the IELTS. I am employed by my school, and was an orientation leader. I also involve my many activities when I was in high school like the Student Council, Chess Club, took part in the plays and dramas at my high school for 4 years as a narrator and writer,…I am also in my college’s dean list. What is my chance of getting accepted? Please answer me!
