What are my chances of getting into cal states

Hi I’m a highschool student in orange County southern California. I have a 2.6 gpa and an 1850 SAT. What are my chances of getting into cal state fullerton, longbeach, and sdsu and sjsu. I am majoring in biochem

The Cal states use the eligibility index for determining acceptances.
(CSU GPA x800) + (SAT Math + CR)= EI

Based on your GPA and SAT scores and not knowing your SAT breakdown:

SDSU/CSLUB: Reach

SDSU EI around 4100+
CSULB EI around 3900+

CSUF: Low Reach
CSUF EI around 3700+

SJSU: Low Reach
SJSU EI around 3500+

SJSU is the only CSU that publishes their EI thresholds for each major. You can try and raise your SAT score to compensate for the low GPA to make the EI thresholds, consider another major and/or schools that match your EI or consider community college for 2 years and transfer into a CSU.

It’s 630 writing 620 math 600 cr

Is your GPA of 2.6, your CSU GPA?
http://www.csumentor.com/planning/high_school/gpa_calculator.asp

I jist checked yes 2.62

Based on the CSU GPA of 2.62 and SAT (Math+CR) of 1220, your EI is 3316.

I am posting some links for the non-impacted and impacted CSU campuses and another on the impacted majors for each campus.

Your EI is too low for the Cal states you have listed. I would look at applying to at least one non-impacted campus: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, Dominguez Hills, East Bay or Stanislaus to ensure you have a solid safety school.

Then look at the CSU major matrix and see which campuses offer Biochemistry as a non-impacted major and target these schools as your Match/High Match schools. There would be no harm in applying to SJSU, but since their EI threshold last year was 3500, I would not expect it to be much lower but you never know.

Good Luck.

Ok thank you yea i know my gpa holds me back but I was told that my SAT would help alot.

The Cal States are all about numbers, so your EI is important. SAT scores help but do not make up for a low GPA.

Good Luck.

If you go to high school in OC, then Fullerton is your service area (unless you’re in HB or Los Al then it’s LB).

Here is the link for the local service areas. You will receive priority at the CSU in your local area, so you can get accepted with lower stats than the out of service area applicants. The only exceptions are SDSU and Cal Poly SLO. They do give priority to locals, but due to the competitiveness of these campuses, there is no guarantee and all their majors are impacted. Even your local CSU may have higher requirements due to impaction.

So would an index of 3316 then and me being local raise my chances

Yes, being local for CSU Fullerton will help your chances, but Biochem is impacted so they will have higher requirements. It is worth an application, but the an EI of 3700 is preferable.

From CSUF website:::
Fullerton is an impacted campus for all first time freshmen. Impaction means that there are more applications for a campus than can be accommodated. In order to ensure that capacity is not exceeded, more rigorous standards are applied to the freshmen applicant pool. Impacted criteria may include local vs. out of local and major program impaction. This means that all freshmen applicants, whether in our local admissions area or outside of our local admissions area, and depending on major, must anticipate meeting higher levels of competition than the minimum Eligibility Index required by the non-impacted campuses of the CSU.

Just apply broadly so you have some choices in the Spring.

I wish I could change it i already applied

I thought you could go back into your application and add more schools?

I applied to fullerton longbeach and dominguez hills and sjsu and sdsu all under biochem

And how does it work generally? Is it like if you are within the range of El you have a good chance ?

@Ajay123: The CSU’s will rank each applicant for each major based on their EI. They then start accepting from the top down until all spots are filled. The EI for each major will fluctuate each depending upon the competitiveness of each in-coming Freshman class. SJSU is the only CSU that publishes their EI’s for each major but it can give you a good guideline of your chances. If you fall below the threshold, you can be either placed as Undeclared, waitlisted or rejected.

I really only see CSUDH as a solid match for you. The rest of the schools have much higher EI’s along with being impacted. If possible, I would add a few more non-impacted CSU’s to your application so you will have some choices.

Looks like you have one safety (CSUDH) with all of the rest probably being reaches.

Add some more non-impacted (safety) and less impacted (match?) campuses if you prefer them over CSUDH.

Of course, this assumes that you can afford all of them.

What then would you guys say are my chances of getting into fullerton and long beach

Long Beach: No
SDSU: No
SJSU: Maybe as Undeclared
CSUF: Maybe (only because you are local)
CSUDH: Yes

You have applied to all impacted campuses except CSUDH. Add one or two of the following schools that are not impacted for Biochem: Bakersfield, Channel Islands, East Bay, Fresno, Humboldt, LA, Northridge, Sac state, San Bernardino, San Fran, San Marcos or Stanislaus.

Your SAT is competitive, your GPA is not. GPA is a stronger indicator of how you will perform in college, since it is a accumulation of work over several years in HS. A test score is from 1 day.

Other option is attend a community college for 2 years and then transfer into a better CSU.
