I have a 35 ACT (Super score 36 of sub scores, 36, 36, 35, 36)
My unweighted GPA is 3.98
Weighted GPA is 5.3 (My school has a 6.0 weighted scale with regular is 4.0, honors is 5.0, and AP/IB is 6.0)
I will be graduating with an IB Diploma
I have ran for the Cross Country team for all 4 years and have been named All-District my Junior year and hopefully All-State my senior year.
I have ran for the track team and placed 4th at the State Championship 800 and 3rd in the 4x800 relay.
I am currently president of the Mu Alpha Theta Math club and have placed 2nd twice at the state competition, once in cal once in stats
I was in HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America) my sophomore year where I placed 1st in Medical Math at the State Competition.
For my senior year I was selected by interview to be part of my cities Mayors Youth Council club.
I will be joining NHS my senior year (did not know about the club junior year lol)
Those are all my credentials and I was wondering what your opinion was on my chances as well as anything I can do to improve them. Duke and MIT have been my top schools for a while and would be great if I could go there.
I’m worried that you don’t have a rigorous courseload. Your UW GPA is excellent but your weighted GPA suggests a lack of AP/IB courses.
Make sure you take a rigorous courseload your senior year and maybe do some community service ECs that fit your interests
Your stats sound great, my daughter was accepted into both MIT and Duke this year, with stats right around yours. Just focus on your essays, as they are really an important part of your applications. If possible, apply ED to Duke as it will raise your admission chances. MIT has a non restrictive early action that I believe you can apply to as well, but it does not significantly raise your chance of admission. My daughter applied to both under regular decision.
An IB diploma is as rigorous as you can get. I would not add ECs at this date. Your best course of action is to make your application essays the best they can be over the summer. Make sure your application is cohesive.
Looks like you need to punch up your English grammar and punctuation ( “I have ran”, lack of proper commas), unless your post was done in haste and isn’t representative of your writing.
You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are good. If you are interested in math, pursue more math related extracurriculars this summer and fall. Start another math club, enter in more competitions, take an extra math course online, etc. Colleges want applicants that show they are both passionate and skilled in a particular subject matter or two. Write amazing essays and you could get accepted to any of these schools
Sadly my school has not offered much in the math department. I finished the highest math class available my Junior year (AP Cal Ab and IB Math SL); I will be going an entire year without an actual math class. I plan on studying Cal BC on my own to challenge the exam in the spring. Is this a good idea or are there any other suggestions in which I can further pursue math.
Can you take a dual enrollment math class or even stats? I wouldn’t take a year off from math if possible!
You’re a strong candidate. But watch your grammar…“have ran” is incorrect.
Your math plan is good, but I agree that if Statistics or AP Stats is available, take that also.
I took AP Statistics my sophomore year. The only dual enrollment option is college algebra which previous graduates have told me is basically a recap of Alg 1 and 2 with no rigor.
