What are my chances of getting into Duke?

So I’m a senior in high school, and I don’t usually do the “what are my chances” stuff because sometimes I feel like it can be discouraging and prevent individuals from shooting for their goals. I’ve already applied to Duke so why not?

I go to a catholic high school that is extremely rigorous. I transferred to the catholic high school from a public school, so it has caused some inconstancies in my overall ECs and grades. We are only allowed to take one AP sophomore year and two junior/senior year. Our GPA is calculated very weirdly and is also lowered because we are required to take a bunch of non-honors religion classes and other elective classes like philosophy and fine arts. Duke is my dream school and I’d give anything to get in.

Here are my stats:

SAT: 1540 (superscore) 1480 (composite)

GPA: 4.36

AP: 5 total - got fours on both AP bio and AP Lit

Class rank: 7 of 70 (top 10%)

Extracurriculars:

I created my own “small business.” It’s not really a huge deal, but I wrote my essay on it and have made over $1,680 dollars. I started selling my items on Etsy this year.

I have applied for an ROTC 4 year scholarship. The Duke and Chapel Hill professors of military science said I would probably get it.

I started the engineering club at my school with 49 members

I was appointed to the Superintendent student advisory board by my principle where students from the surrounding catholic schools talk about how to make catholic schools better.

I’m the secretary for my school’s National Honors Society

I’m an SGA representative

I’ve played club tennis for over six years and HS tennis for 3. I founded my current high school’s tennis team and am the captain and first seed. I was the second seed freshman year at my old school as well as the captain.

I’m an officer for my school’s volunteer service committee and have done over 124 hours of service junior year, receiving the presidential service award.

(that’s all I put on my application)

Congrats on your stellar achievements. Continue to work hard and you will succeed regardless of where you attend. a competitive candidate for Duke and other elite universities. However, by their very nature and and anemic admission rates, Duke (and other tippy tops) are all far reaches for everyone. There will be many perfect scores and GPAs denied. You have great ECs so that helps a bunch! It’s just very competitive and there is no way to gauge.

Best of luck and continued success.

You sound like a very competitive candidate. Things you can’t control: Whether other students from your school are applying early, the number of legacy, “hooked” or athletic recruits applying early this year, what the school’s admissions focus is for its class of 2023, etc. All to say, what you’ve done is very impressive, but now it’s a waiting and hoping game. But remember, with admit rates in the single and low double digits, it’s a game of chance. Be proud and best of luck!
