Hi everyone,
I am currently going into my senior year of college as a Mechanical Engineering major with minors in Electrical Engineering and Math at a CSU. I currently have a 3.7 overall GPA and 3.89 major GPA. I am not sure on what my chances are of getting into a good graduate program such as UC Berkeley, Stanford, MIT. I also want to apply to other UCs like Irvine and SD. I have been a part of a bio-mechanics research lab at my university for a year but have not had any publications. I have been a lab assistant for the material science labs for a year also. I have also worked on several engineering teams that take part in engineering competitions like SpaceX Hyperloop and BAJA SAE competitions. I’ve had a total of 3 internships and am in talking for my 4th one. With this information, do I have a good chance at the schools I mentioned earlier?
You seem to have some good qualifications. Probably a lot depends on your desired specialty vs the programs. You should ask for advise from your research prof - he/she may even have some contacts at those schools.
I will ask him about that! Thanks I didn’t even consider that.
Do you want a terminal MS or a PhD?
If it’s the latter, you don’t search by school name, but by the professor(s) doing the work that interests you. Depending on what that is, a school like Wisconsin or Texas A&M might be the best, and MIT and Stanford might not be that good.
If you want a terminal MS, does your school have a 4+1? It is a very efficient way to get a MS. Going somewhere like Stanford where MS is both non-thesis based and non-funded, can cost $100,000.
Be sure to sign up to take the GRE if you haven’t already.
