What are my chances of getting into Howard? HU22

Hi,
Before applying, I was very sure of my chances of getting into Howard until I saw the admissions profile for the class of 2020. I come from top ranked school in my state and we are also ranked in the top 100 in the nation. Last year 20 people from my school applied and only 12 were accepted. A lot of the people excepted had high gpas and test scores. Here are my stats:
GPA (UW)- 3.31
GPA (W) -3.95
ACT- 26 :frowning:
SAT-- 1230 :frowning:
Extracurricular-

  1. Varsity Track
  2. volunteered with several campaign offices
    3 made a track camp
  3. School newspaper
  4. Religious and ethnic clubs (Black Culture Clubs) at my school
  5. Tutored foreign language
  6. I had a job
8 Student led school spirit club
  7. I’m in the school band but I put that under education and not in activities for some reason.

I feel kind of mediocre and a lot of people from my school who are applying have higher gpas and test scores. My test scores are above the mean accepted in previous years but I just don’t feel like I did enough. My recommendation letters came from teachers that I am close to and were able to put in some details about my work ethics. My supplemental essay was decent and well thought out for the College of Arts and Sciences. After this year, I will have taken and passed with 3s and 4s on 8 AP exams and I have taken many AA courses throughout my high school career. My biggest fear is that they decline me because of my rough freshman year (Had some Cs on my transcript from that year only). Howard has so many opportunities and I want to major in Political Science and Journalism. My anxiety is at an all time high right now and 12/15 can’t come soon enough. My birthday shortly after December 15th so this will make an interesting Christmas/Birthday present. Lol.

I guess I made this thread for ALL potential HU22 students. Post those stats and we can all collectively calm each other down and give updates on any changes/acceptances/rejections. Good luck everyone!

sorry for any typos, this was done on my phone.

DUDE. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t be accepted based off of what I am seeing here. As long as your essays correspond with the awesome stats, I feel like you’ll definitely be in.

i’ve heard horror stories of people with higher stats not getting accepted so you never know.

You’re right. All we can do is hope for the best. After much panicking and self assuring, I eventually felt like I could accept whatever they give me. My test scores are a bit lower than your’s, so I’m literally in the 25% bracket for scores (Jesus Take the Wheel). Who know’s what will happen. But based off your credentials and how passionate you are as a student --know that you are a competitor! Don’t let those horror stories get to you. I mean, what if those intellectually gifted students wrote crappy one-dimensional essays and had no community changing activities? I think the school understands that a student’s potential doesn’t solely rest upon stats (though it’s still very important); it’s the overall application. Let’s cross our fingers and hope for the best!

Howard is a match for you, very likely acceptance.

I’m hopeful that my essay pushes me over the edge (in a good way of course). I got accepted into Bethune Cookman the other day and that really boosted my confidence even though it isn’t as prestigious of a school as Howard is.

Awesome! I’m just hoping my extracurricular activities are good enough to balance out my application. I have a 3.96 (UW) and a 4.5 (W) GPA… and then there’s my 22 ACT score (ew). I cringe every time I see my test scores. But at this point, it is what it is. Got to (temporarily) accept it. Taking the exam again in December for other potential colleges and for scholarships. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah I expected to do a lot better on my tests but it just turned out that I didn’t and I can’t do anything about that now. All I can do is just sit here and wait.
