I'm at the end of my freshman year as a physics major (bs) but want to switch into mechanical engineering. My high school did next to nothing for preparing me for college so my GPA quickly sunk to just under a 2.0. I only took 1 AP class in high school, so coming to college and taking effectively 4 AP classes was a shock. Last semester I had a heavy work load (16 credits of all STEM classes). This semester I'm taking 1 less class for 13 credits total.
Is it likely that I get into the mechanical engineering major if I explain that my workload was too much too quick in too hard of a major early on?

You give no hint of where you are enrolled. Are you expecting an answer that is guaranteed to apply to every college in the country? Do you think there is such an answer?

Mech Engg is a very hard major, too.

Mech E is likely harder and you’d probably have to retake some classes. Can you afford an extra year of college right now? If so and you feel you can do better now that you got the hang of things, Mech E is also an excellent investment. Just be aware that you’ll have 5 years of college ahead of you.

Maybe starting over at a community college is a good idea.
