I’m currently a senior at a small, private, catholic school in IL and I was wondering what my chances are of getting into Michigan. Here are some of my stats:
Ranked 1 of 66 in my class
Weighted GPA: 4.29
UW GPA: Believe it's around 3.7
31 ACT
I've taken 3/4 AP classes offered at my HS
Member of NSHSS (National Society of High School Scholars)
Illinois State Scholar
Taken 3 college courses (Psychology, Speech, Music Appreciation)
Member of several clubs
3 sport athlete, tennis captain
100+ hours of community service
Please help! Any advice/feedback is much appreciated.
Michigan values GPA over test scores and it sounds like your HS does not have much grade inflation. Your ACT is on the low end of Michigan’s range but your rigor and rank are good. You have a medium chance, but you could improve it by increasing your ACT score to the 75th percentile. (about 34)
What is your Michigan GPA? Michigan counts all B’s as 3, all A’s as 4 etc…
If you are applying to CoE it is unlikely you would be admitted without a high ACT math score.
LSA is more likely to admit you.
You essays should be all about you… that will probably make the most difference.
Retaking the ACT on Saturday, hoping to get 32+. What is your opinion on taking the ACT multiple times? I’ve heard that it doesn’t matter how many times you take it, but other say it doesn’t look good. Saturday will be my third time taking it. If I don’t improve my score, would it be okay to take it again in November and apply RD?
Also, not completely sure what my Michigan GPA is, but I do have a decent amount of Bs, especially in my AP courses.
Three attempts in ACT is fine. Your current GPA and ACT are both below admission average. Try recalculate your UM uwGPA, but it is not likely to make it above the admission average unless you have mostly A-. UMich LSA would be a reach to low reach for you due to mediocre GPA and test score as well as low OOS admission rate.
Hopefully the fact that I’ve taken the most rigorous schedule possible, other than taking Bio II Hon instead of AP Physics, will help. I mean certainly a 3.6 with a rigorous schedule is more impressive than a 4.0 with a bunch of easy classes.
It seems the class rank is by wGPA. UMich care less about rank anyway. Perhaps your 3.6 uwGPA may worth 3.8+ at other school, but you still need to get your ACT up. If the top of the class is only getting 31 in ACT, it does not help much even if getting 4.0 GPA. Taking high rigor courses are good, but one need to be careful that GPA would not be suffered.
