What are my chances of getting into music schools (violist)?

I haven’t found a situation similar to mine so I thought I’d post and see if anyone can help. I’m a violist, am Hispanic, and have tons of experience with orchestral performance and some in chamber music (I’ve also been a soloist about 3 times).
I’m interested in a performance major in a classical program.
I know because of my instrument, my chances are a little higher than others, but I just don’t want to give myself false hope. Is their a substantial difference in my chances of getting into schools like Eastman, Manhattan School of Music, New England Conservatory, and Mannes because of my instrument (viola)?

  • If it makes any difference I have attended both New England Conservatory’s and Manhattan School of Music’s summer programs.

It’s going to depend upon your prescreen/audition and the needs of the program. Attending a school’s summer programs usually won’t carry a lot of weight in the undergrad decisions process.

Consider adding CIM to your list of prospective schools as they have an affiliation with the Sphinx Organization and that could help you.

Is it easier for a good violist to get into a major conservatory than an equally skilled violinist? They answer is yes. If you are a good violist, you dance card will fill quickly.

@“Mezzo’sMama” I’d like to thank you for the recommendation of CIM! I’ve only skimmed through their website but it seems like their program might suit me.
