Deferred isn’t a list. It usually means you’re freshly reviewed as part of the RD pool. They liked you enough to keep you in play, but you were not chosen as part of the early round.
I am very surprised you were deferred. Your record is excellent. Did you apply to UNC? I am not at all an expert, but I think you will end up getting admitted to both schools. You certainly deserve it.
Just my honest opinion. I don’t think you’ll get into Engineering with the ACT scores. I love your grades in the Senior level AP classes but that’s not where they place emphasis. The scores of Engineering students accepted are pretty lofty. If you have your heart on Engineering then I would make sure you have some applications into some Southern colleges that are just as good but do not have such competitiveness. In four years, you’ll be pretty equal with the people NCSU accepted anyway. If you are set on NCSU, then I’d change my major to something less competitive.
I would see if you can study up on Math and Science and retake the ACT or SAT to improve your Math (Math/Science) score. That is what is will be the deciding factor for you.
I ended up getting deferred from UNC as well. My counselors and teachers were so confused by this that they called admissions and even looked through my application to see if I messed up on anything.
I think you can get in for Exploratory Studies - Engineering is super competitive, so that will be more iffy, but maybe, depends what the pool is like but your classes and GPA look good.
Your stats are similar to my daughter who was also deferred from NCSU engineering but accepted to Clemson and UNC. Your deferral from UNC is surprising.
I was accepted into the engineering program this year at Nc State with a 29 ACT. I was also accepted to chapel hill. I have a friend at school who was deferred from computer Science at NC state but accepted at Chapel Hill with an 1160 on his SAT. So you never know.
State is very numbers driven (not a bit holistic) and your test scores are on the low side. I think you’re on the bubble - I’ll be neither shocked if you do or don’t get in.
