My dream school is to get into the drama program stonestreet studios at NYU Tisch… The only problem is I have a 2.59 cumulative gpa. I know this is not very good, but I have lots of experience and I think I will do incredibly well in my audition. If people have any tips on what I need to do please let me know. (p.s, I have not taken the SAT yet).
Highly unlikely with a 2.59 GPA in HS which would be a sure sign to the NYU admissions staff that you would not be able to handle NYU-level college work.
First of all, it is impossible to “chance” anyone for an auditioned BFA program. The talent reviews are too subjective and unpredictable, and nobody can get into Tisch - regardless of academic record - without a knockout audition. Tisch is known as a “50/50” school (although that is a misnomer), meaning they claim to give equal weight to your transcript/test results and to your talent review/audition. Talent will always trump transcript, but you need to meet some basic academic criteria. Is your GPA unweighted or weighted? If you have taken rigorous courses, which would bring it up to a 3.0 or better by next year, you might have an outside chance. Given your weak grades, you would also need competitive test scores. NYU might be test-optional, but that will only place more emphasis on your grades. If finances aren’t a major concern, you might as well give Early Decision at NYU a shot. That is not a good strategy if you need financial aid, however, since they are legendarily stingy and you would be committed to attending in most circumstances. If they still follow the same protocols that they did 3-4 years ago (when my older son was looking at Theater programs), they give a straight “up-or-down” decision for ED - no deferrals. That would give you a chance to widen your net. If you’re serious about auditioned BFA programs, it’s time to start putting together your monologues and looking into a lot of options. Each school has different requirements, and the audition season gets crazy. College Confidential’s Theater Major forum is terrific. I found it very helpful. Good luck!
Agree with woogzmama that TSOA, like CMU, values talent and transcript. Some programs are conservatories in liberal arts clothing, but not TSOA. Spend 9 hours 3 x week in studio and then hit the books for your academic courses and you’ll see what I mean.
