I just submitted my application to Purdue into the School of Engineering. Though I know Purdue as a whole is a pretty prestigious school, I am more worried about getting into the engineering school. Can someone tell me my chances?

I am an African-American senior in high school. top 10 %. I get mostly A's with an occasional B or two, I don't know if admissions counselors look at course rigor or not. I am in the Principal's Advisory Council, the Student Athletic Council, and a member of National Honor Society. I have run track for four years, with a varsity for three, and cross country for two years. I have also been in a Minority Engineering program since sixth grade, five engineering program at IUPUI, as well as three summer engineering programs at Purdue. These three included a five-week program with emphasis on college preparation, where I had actual classes (Calc, Chemistry, English, with Aeronautical, and Civil Engineering projects.) I'm still worried about my GPA and my SAT, because it seems like everyone I talk to has 2300 or something, so could you guys help me out?
Thank you

I’m not quite so sure why you think Purdue is so prestigious, but it is actually extremely easy to get into Purdue.

With your stats, you’re effectively guaranteed entry. You might actually be able to go to some of the top private liberal arts colleges or possibly even some of the Ivy-class colleges.

Well, Purdue’s college of engineering is in the top ten in the nation. Not to sound ignorant, but I’m not too worried about getting into the university as a whole, but specifically the college of engineering. Do you think I have a good chance for that?

You’ll be fine.

If anything, Purdue’s a bit too low on the totem pole for you.

Well, I can’t really pay for all those other higher caliber engineering schools out there, and I 'm in-state, so it’s probably as good as it’s going to get. But thank you for actually reading this thread and responding.

Purdue engineering would be a high match for you already. Don’t waste your money to apply UCB or Cornel unless you can bring up your SAT 200+ points.

Well, I’m basically set on Purdue, I just don’t know if I’ll be accepted directly into their engineering school, or will have to reapply sophomore year

Can somebody else help me out?

Are you in state?
With a SAT Math score of 690, engineering may be a little bit tough for you.

Yes, i am in state. But (typical response) I’m getting 800s in math practice SAT’s

But I know a lot of times practice tests mean nothing

in that case, you should definitely retake SAT and perhaps take SAT2 Math2 also. That would boost your chance for engineering.

Do I prepare for that differently than the regular SAT?

Purdue does not require SAT2, but you want to proof that you are indeed good in math. For Math2, you just need skills up to pre-calc. You may get some practice test to review. If you use the Barron’s one, it may get you over-prepared. When you get 700s in Barrons, you may get 800 in the real test. Nevertheless, retaking the SAT1 may also be a good idea as your other section scores are not that high either. Anyway, for in state URM with score at or above 25%, you should have a decent chance.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Now I’m strongly considering taking the SAT2 test and have already checked out Barron’s SAT book to be prepared…but it’s kind of old

Bump!! please anyone else?

To add to my previous stats, I am now a National Achievement Semifinalist

C’mon people, I need more advice!!!

Bump, Bump…BUUUUUMMMPPP.
