What are my chances of getting into Red McCombs?

Here are my stats:

  • Ethnicity: INDIAN (How much will this affect me?)
  • Local Texas resident, top 5% of my class
  • 1940 on my SAT (I know this is really low...)
  • 3.9 Unweighted GPA
  • Taken 10 AP Classes
  • Taken 5 PAP Classes
  • Varsity Tennis, NHS, NTHS, DECA, BPA, STUCO
  • An Independent study class where I'm under the mentorship of a business professional (He went to UT BHP so I know he can write a good rec letter) Over 150 volunteer hours

Could someone please tell me how UT goes through their application process?

Towards the end of this document is the best description I have found. In my opinion, you have a pretty good chance at McCombs.

@gettingschooled Wow thank you for your reply! Your input means a lot to me! Not to take up more of your time, but is my SAT Score acceptable for my ethnicity? I was under the impression that I needed a much higher score since I am Indian.

Thanks Again!

Your SAT score is a bit low, not going to lie. What are your subscores? McCombs doesn’t weigh the writing score heavily. However, the math score is weighed very highly.

If your Math score is baller, like 750+, and like your reading score is decent, like low 700s/high 600+, you actually might have a good chance. But if your Math score is sub-700 it’s going to a serious reach.

I got accepted last week with a way worse class rank ( top 11% ) but my SAT score was good ( 2230/770 Math ).

However, there’s no way to know for sure. You seem to have good ECs so we’ll just have to wait and see…

My math score is a 660 and my reading is a 660 as well. I’m still a junior so I know I can improve math a lot, I messed up on test day. Do you know how big a factor ethnicity plays in all this? @RamenUniversity

if you are still a junior, then you have some time to get the SAT score up. Take the ACT as well. You’ll be able to take tests through next Fall, but don’t push it. UT uses the score that gets you the highest AI. They do not superstore though.

Keep your rank as high as possible- There is a difference between 5 percent and 6 percent in the formula. Look at the formula- rank matters a lot.

As to race, I have read a lot of the Fisher documents and no one, not even UT, can really tell you the impact of race in their process. It is a factor in the PAI but not one with a numerical value. It is out of your control, so worry about what you can control which at this point in the process is still an awful lot. Good luck.

@niharm. Take @gettingschooled’s suggestion on the ACT. I had a similar overall score to yours on the SAT with a 710 math but got a 33 on the ACT with a 35 math and 33 English. Also the class rank is important. After my sophomore year I was top 6.1% and after junior year 3.8%. Every bit of improvement makes a difference on the AI.

@K20903 thanks for your help. I’ll take your advice!
