My situation is kind of complicated, but ill break it down. My freshmen year of high school i went through a life changing event and it took my life completely off course. I had no idea what i wanted to do with myself. That was until i realized i wanted to do architecture (i dont quite know how i came to this conclusion). With no previous background in art i hoped for the best and went to RISD Pre-college during the summer of 2011 and received all A's and B's. It was then i realized i wanted to go to RISD to receive my B'arch and M'arch. I spent my senior year pulling together a portfolio as quickly as possible, along with the hometest drawings (which i spent 2 months thinking about and 2 weekends actually drawing). In the end i ended up applying to Wentworth, Mass Art, Sci-Arc, SCAD, Pratt, RISD and Cooper Union.

As far as my application goes, i received an amazing recommendation from my Pre-college arch professor and my AP art teacher (who i have known for all of 2 months b/c i never took art classes before senior year) and my guidance councilor (explaining the accident). I wrote extremely strong essays (in other peoples opinion) in which i gave a hint of my 'life changing event'. And a transcript that showed extreme improvement senior year (as i now know what i want to do with my life).

I have a weighted GPA of 3.2 (i know it is bad) <-- this is the main reason for why i believe i wont get in.
SAT Scores of 1700
and an ACT score of 23 (which i believe doesnt reflect my SAT scores)

I have already gotten into Wentworth and SCAD, both with a amazing merit based and artistic based (only scad) scholarships. I was surprised i received any scholarships at all because i dont find my work scholarship worthy. But hey, opinion is opinion.

I was wondering if anyone could take what i have given into account and tell me my chances of getting into RISD

RISD is one of the art schools that does lay emphasis on academics in an individual’s creative pursuit, trying to make their students achieve a balance of both traditional academics and art (in your case, architecture). It’s affiliated with Brown, so. Therefore, your grades are going to count. One of my friends got rejected from RISD, in spite of having an amazing portfolio as well as a 2170 in SAT. But then again, another friend of mine got in with a great portfolio with a 2000 in SAT (which isn’t a bad score, but lower than my first friend). So grades wise, it can be a little random sometimes, but at the end of the day - they do count. They want artistic talent and a yearning to learn more.

Having said that, since your portfolio is very professional and strong, you could still be in the running. Good luck!

Thanks very much! I am well aware that RISD is very picky as far as academia goes, but regardless, it is my top choice and how will i know if i dont try :). I was also wondering, what do you think of my hometest drawings? As i recently finished them i havent gotten much outside criticism on them.

But on a side not, what major is your sisters friend perusing at scad, and do you know anything about its arch program in particular?

Lastly, not to throw so many questions out there, but i had to ask, what do you think of my chances of getting into Pratt? In my line of colleges i would say it is the next step after SCAD.

Yeah, no harm in trying As far as your hometest drawings go, I personally really like them! The concepts are strong and the execution is good, too. I used to do some art, I think it’s fab.
Haha no I don’t know what she’s in majoring in, I think fashion something, not design, communications or merchandise or something! Not too sure.
I don’t know much about Pratt, never really explored it. But I hear it’s great for fine arts.
