The biggest concern you need to look into is paying for college, particularly if the parent you do not live with is uncooperative with financial aid paperwork and/or has significant income or wealth but won’t pay. Most schools with good financial aid require supplemental forms like CSS/Profile that include the non-custodial parent information (the exception would be UCs, but their financial aid is only good if you are a California resident). Be sure to run the net price calculator on the web site of each school you are applying to.

Your stats are excellent and will not keep you out of any schools, but the super-selective schools like most of your list typically want something extra, like a state or national level achievement, award, or recognition. Being Latino may help at some schools, but should not be relied on when assessing chances. Note that some schools have different admissions selectivity level depending on division or major (Washington is well known – only a few frosh get in as CS majors; others who want to major in CS face an extremely competitive admissions process later).

Be sure to find a safety to start off your application list. This is a school that you are certain to be admitted to, certain you can afford, and which you like. UCR may be such a school if you can afford it and sign up during June 16-July 31, 2014. If you cannot rely on need-based financial aid, look at the list here: <a href=“Automatic Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships - #300 by BobWallace - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>Automatic Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships - #300 by BobWallace - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums;

Note that if need-based aid cannot be relied on due to the divorced parents situation or net price calculator results showing that need-based aid is not enough, take a look at these threads, in addition to the automatic merit thread given above. They list competitive large merit scholarships (i.e. reach/match, not safety) and National Merit scholarships (some automatic, some competitive):

Bumpity bump bump

Your stats are excellent - 7 SAT IIs?? I’m impressed - and ECs are solid. I think you have a pretty good shot at most of the schools you listed although obviously some of them (MIT/Harvard/Princeton/Yale, etc) are reaches for anyone. I would focus on getting a few more safeties. I think that your sophomore year classes are relatively weaker but your rigorous course load junior and senior year make up for it. Also I would definitely write an essay on your experiences moving around - it sounds like a really interesting story!

Thanks for the reply virago1

Dude, you’re really qualified for any school (and you should def. apply all the ones you are interested in like Stanford). Although nobody is for sure going to be accepted, you have to try in order to have a shot. So throw your ticket in the hat and see if it’s picked!

Your credential looks great, but you have around 1/3 reach schools on the list. You may want to narrow down your list a little bit as you don’t want to dilute your effort in writing essays too much.

Ok thanks for the advice

Which ones do you think are reaches?

Bump

If you’re looking to go to CMU, you need to take SAT II’s for Physics for certain colleges there. All of the ivies up there including Duke are reaches for everyone, and even that is generic information.

You have a great match for nearly everything there but for Harvard, Princeton, etc. you need distinction.

Good luck.

Bump

MIT, Caltech, Harvard, Yale, Princeton,… etc are reach even if you have perfect scores.
