I come from Laguardia High School, a fairly competitive high school in the arts and academics in NYC. Stats:
-90 cumulative GPA (Junior year I had a 95 avg, but I was lazy as a freshman and got low-mid 80s)
-4 APs: Calc AB, Physics C: Mechanics senior year and APush, AP english comp junior year
-Sadly no sports on my part due to a leg dysfunction I was born with but I have over 400 hours of volunteering as a piano tutor at a private music school on the upper east side.
-An ACT score of 25 (I am very bad at standardized testing)
-Fairly talented in music
-Aside from the tutoring, a few extra music EC's

I really want to go to Stony Brook for computer science, because I cant stand NYC and want to get out. I also really like their program and environment. What are my chances and any tips that would be able to boost my chances would be very appreciated.

OH MY GOD. DUDE, I FEEL YOU. I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF NYC AND I LITERALLY THINK STONY BROOK IS MY ONLY OPTION TO GET OUT.

And lol are you serious? I go one of the horrible high schools right next to Laguardia.

Anyways, I think you have a great chance at getting into Stony Brook. Your stats are pretty solid and great job at keeping up the high average! Moreover, your extracurriculars are an extra boost to your application. But I know what you mean about standardized testing; I absolutely hate it so sO SO much. But back to your application, if you have a killer personal essay and decent letter of recommendations, I think you’ll definitely be able to get in!

Good luck with you college application process, friend! I hope we both get into Stony Brook. :+)

Thanks I appreciate it! I hope you get in as well.!! Stony seems like a perfect option! Not too far yet far enough. I am worried though that my ACT score is a bit below the schools average… but I hope that if everything goes well I should have a decent chance in getting in! Good luck to you as well :)

@Gabe6421 Thanks pal. And ugh, I know what you mean. My SAT scores and ACT scores are definitely below what the colleges I’m applying to are expecting. I believe that’s gonna be the downfall of my application.

However, Stony Brook wants applicants to have a 26+ composite ACT score with 24/25 in English and 26/27 in Math. Did you reach those or not yet? And if not, did you take December ACT? Also, although you mentioned the ACT, did you take the SAT? Nonetheless, you’re ACT score isn’t that far off to what Stony Brook wants. I think if other parts of your application are strong (which they are), then don’t stress too much.

But then again, I’m being a hypocrite because I CANNOT STOP STRESSING lol.

@LOLHELPME hahaha same…Stony Brook is a dream for me and I cant imagine not going there. I did take the December ACT but I found it very hard… even with a bunch of ACT prep beforehand… it was just generally harder than avg… all of my friends bombed it as well. On my previous ACT I got a 27 math 27 english 22 reading 23 science (ik crap). I dont know If my scores will go up on this one but if they do then it will be minimal… Im hoping for a 26-27 on this one.

@Gabe6421 Okay, well at least you met the requirements to some extent which is great. I hope you all the best of luck on the December ACT, though!!! I was going through the December ACT forum and yeah, I’ve heard it was harder than usual. But don’t worry, I’m sure you will reach your target score!

1310 New SAT, 89 GPA, 2 clubs, one of which I am secretary of (Debate club), probably one amazing letter recommendation and maybe one mediocre one, going to have a job over the summer and also just recently got an award for an honorable mention for a Northeastern US chem essay I wrote. What are my chances.
