Hi, so I am a High School senior right now and I'm applying Early Decision to TCNJ.

I've taken the SAT twice, the first time I took it in January got a 1680 (without really studying) and I took it again in June and got a 1790. I'm taking it again October 1st so I'm hoping to improve my score a lot more this last time. The breakdown of my SAT is:

Writing: 610 CR: 640 Math: 540

I know that my math score is low and I'm definitely working on that (aiming for at least 600's) but keep in mind that I am applying ED so that should help a little bit hopefully.

My GPA is a 3.9

I want to major in Kindergarten/Elementary Education. I've been in the Preschool teaching program at my high school since Sophomore year and I'm currently in my 4th level of the program where I get field experience through leaving during the school day and teaching children in an actual elementary school classroom (which is Honors weighted).

As for extracurriculars, I have been a part of the Winter and Spring Track & Field team for 4 years (Varsity this past spring) and I've been on the Varsity Cross Country team for 2 years. On my common app I'm putting that I would participate in it in college in case that increases my chances of getting in due to them being interested in my athletics. I also volunteer a lot (Started a food drive, Spent time with patients in a mentally disabled center, Volunteer at my old elementary school, Paint children's faces at a community day, Buddy Ball, Volunteer for marching band, etc). I'm also president of the NJFEA (New Jersey Future Educators Association) of my school which is directly linked to TCNJ.

So although my scores aren't as great as they could be, if I write a solid essay and since I'm applying ED, what do you think my chances are realistically? Thanks!

I think you have a chance if you improve your SAT scores at least a bit and show a lot of interest in the school. ED will probably increase your chances. Also, I suggest you take the SAT IIs or the ACT…

It’s too late to sign up for the SAT subject tests or the ACT so I’m afraid I’m stuck with just my last chance at my SAT. And I’m not really sure about my rank but I’m in the higher end. I don’t really know where to find that information though, I don’t see it on Naviance! D: I may have to ask my counselor.

I suggest you do that. My school didoes report rank so I’m not sure how to find it on Naviance. Do you have a copy of your transcript? It should be on there…

What do you expect to get on the SATs? I suggest doing A LOT of math practice problems as they are all of a similar structure and it is important to get used to the kinds of questions you will see and how to do them.

Yeah, I tried looking on my transcript but it’s not there either. Ugh. And I’m hoping to get in the high 1800’s, hopefully 1900 if I do really well. And no, I’ve taken honors classes but no APs :/. I was planning on taking AP Psychology last year but there was a screw up with my schedule and by the time I was placed in it it was too late to do the summer assignment so I was put into Intro to Psych instead. Do you think my extra curriculars could balance that out? I maintain pretty good grades (straight A’s for most part) for having sports literally every single day and I do every season. It takes up a lot of time so hopefully they see that.

They will definitely take that into consideration. Also, being president of the NJFEA at your school is very impressive.
Do the admissions officers ever visit your school? If they do, definitely meet with them and make a good impression. Ask a lot of questions and explain your situation, they are usually very understanding and helpful.

I don’t think that they are visiting my school, if they did I would definitely take advantage of that. But I am attending this workshop hosted at TCNJ for aspiring teachers (it’s a field trip for my Honors Field Experience in Elementary Education class) so maybe I can find some sort of connection through that. I’m also going to the NJ teacher’s convention in Atlantic City in November.

That sounds perfect. Just make sure to speak to an admissions counselor and show your interest!! When you meet them, I suggest you tell them your name and where you are from (school and city), they may even recognize the school district and remember you when reviewing applications. :)
