My DS is also applying to some of these schools and he has NMSF, NHRP, high ACT and high grades. The issue is that there will be others who look just like you (at least on paper) but with higher scores. Your SAT score will give the schools a reason to deny admission. Fordham might accept you, but the NMSF/NHRP scholarship is competetive and not guaranteed. You are a maybe for NEU and BU. I would encourage you to apply to a couple of schools where you are a match or safety. You might look at some test optional schools, too, as your grades and ECs are good.
I know that BU gives money, but does anyone know any good scholarships or anything for NYU? Or like what I can do to get some money? Because even if I get into NYU, I can’t go unless I get some sort of aid. I will probably end up at BU to be honest although I’d love to try and go to NYU.
Also, I do not see why I would not be able to get into at least BU since they promised me a scholarship (Presidential - NHRP) upon acceptance and also because kids from my school have gotten in with lower credentials
NYU is notoriously awful for financial aid; you can try, but you will be paying a lot of money.
So I just put in your scores to Naviance. - 4.0 GPA and 1850 SAT.
According to Naviance here are the statistics of getting in.
NYU - 63%
BU - 59%
Yale - 33%
Columbia - 33%
northeastern - 89%
Fordham - 89%
UConn - 79%
@saules I am actually shocked. how in the hell do i have a better chance at getting into NYU than BU? and UCONN easier than northeastern? I really appreciate this, but I am actually questioning naviance. I actually use this at my school too. and honestly the fact that I even have a 33% chance at the ivy’s is crazy (& that’s not counting the hispanic aspect)! thank u tho!
P.S. may i ask what part of naviance u used to get this?
I was surprised too. I thought NYU was tougher to get into that BU and maybe it still is despite what Naviance indicates. I went under “Supermatch College Search” and just plugged in your scores. I would take that 33% with a grain of salt because they are IVY’s and you never know with any IVY what they are looking for.
Thinking about this. Naviance wants an unweighted GPA - is your 4.0 unweighted?
ROTFLMAO at those Naviance numbers…those are ridiculous.
^ I agree. 33% chance at Yale and Columbia. Absurd.
^^^ They all are ridiculously high in my opinion.
I agree! Brxndon - if you log into your Naviance you should be able to do a college match, not the super match I did, that will show you the statistics of other students from your own high school who were accepted to these schools. You can look at the scatter graph and see how you fare. I think that’s a better indicator on your likelihood of acceptance.
I’m also thinking about that 4.0. Is your high school a competitive high school? This would make a difference in the decision process. Colleges recognize a 4.0 from one high school might not equal a 4.0 from another.
Id expect you get into UConn, BU, Fordham, and northeastern. Very little chance of Yale or Columbia. Not sure about NYU, not informed about them.
I would say my school is pretty good. It’s a private, catholic school & apparently I’m good for all the schools minus Columbia & Yale. But apparently someone from my school got into Columbia with an 18 or 1900, so it’s not as impossible as Yale. I think Yale is a def no no. But NYU I can because several kids from my school have gotten in with 18’s, plus i hear they care more about GPA. BU, Fordham, Northeastern, UCONN, etc I think I’m good for. My top 3 is BU, NU, & NYU. Still wondering whether BU or NU is better.
Run the NPCs for these schools. They are expensive. NEU is the only one that meets financial need, and your stats are too low for the competitive merit awards.
Ignore this if your parents are OK with paying the $65,000 per year.
@txstella BU offered me 20K scholarship for being a NHRP finalist. NEU offered 30K for it & Fordham offered full ride
Your right about those…As long as you are accepted. Except Forham’s is a competetive award and not guaranteed. Sorry. There is still a lot to pay. Look carefully at the GPA required to keep the awards. I don’t remember the particulars for these schools, but sometimes the requirements are high.
Best wishes.
I think I will probably go to BU or NEU, NYU if i can afford it. I’m not extremely worried about going Ivy since I plan on going to law school anyways so I can always go then.
I agree those schools are nice matches for you. Also, a score in 1800 on the SAT still puts you above 87% of other students who took the exam - not bad at all!
I’m not sure if BU or Northeastern is better. Academically I’d say they are pretty equal. I visited both with my daughter this summer and I personally preferred Northeastern because I liked the campus better and I like their coop program. My daughter on the other hand loved the urban feel of Boston University and preferred that campus. She did like the coop program at Northeastern though. If she ends up getting into both I’m not sure which one she would attend. She is waiting on her ED though which comes out this week so she may never end up applying.
@txstella that should be okay since fordham is more of a safe for me. i really wanna go to BU or NEU. also, not that i am truly considering it, but does anyone know about UCONN’s aid?
