Junior in TX
I'm not in the top ten, but I'm the top quarter:
I got a 3.8 GPA (out of 4) (This proves how competitive my high school is)
SAT: I got a pretty bad grade on my first attempt (1800), but I'm retaking it and hoping to get a 2020+

Extracurriculars:
- Varsity Ice Hockey all 4 years (assistant captain this year, maybe captain next year)
- NHS
- Interact Club (4 years)
- Clements Earth (2 years)
- French Club (3 years) I'm Treasurer this year, President next year.
- YES program
- I've completed 100+ community service hours
- This summer, I'll be volunteering at a hospital for 3 months. (I want to major in pre-Med)

Curriculum:
At my competitive high school, there are only advanced and honors/AP courses. Advanced are "easier".
I took 1 honors freshmen year, 2 sophomore, 3 junior, and I'll be taking 4.5 senior year.
I'll be taking 2 AP exams this year, and 3 next year.
I've taken 5 years of math and science.

Other:
I'm a minority, I have lived in 5 different countries throughout my life, and I won the State Prize for French Poetry during my sophomore year.

With my poor class rank, (not being in the top 8%) what are my chances of getting in?
What other colleges am I qualified for?

Your chances seem pretty good. I live in Texas, and they let in almost ANYONE in state.

Yes, but that’s because they must be in the top 10% of their school.

I have similar stats, but with a 2150 SAT (1500/1600). I got waitlisted. I am sorry. I don’t think you will be able to make it

Similar? Were you in a sport for all four years? Have you lived in 5 different countries?
What else made you stand out?

Thanks.

Living in different countries doesnt really help your application that much. Maybe if your personal essay describes whatever you did in a country that was most memorable or exciting. Dont use the I won a prize in a French poetry contest. Essays are better if theyre about hardships and complications instead of achievements. You have a pretty good chance of getting accepted because Im an out of state student and I got accepted, but of course my GPA and SATs were better. Also get some more extracirculars and hope that that not much of your classmates want to apply to UT at Austin because it will definetly limit your chances. They don’t accept like more than 5 students per school.

Thanks, I was just wondering what your SAT scores were? And what was your rank?

I got an 2375. Class rank was 3rd right after the two valeodictorians.

Ok, that’s pretty impressive, that’s the reason why you easily got in. I still don’t know what my chances are of getting in.
