My UC GPA is on the low side (3.5)
My class rank GPA is higher, 3.8, if that matters. (Did good 9th grade, tanked 10th grade)
I got 2190 on my SAT I
790 on SAT math II, and 720 on Bio.
I volunteered with my church for around 4 years, but I didn't keep track of the number of hours and my church doesn't keep track either...
I helped out at a summer school during the summer and taught kids, mostly preschool to 3rd grade.
I did some martial arts, karate and kendo, got a 1st dan in kendo (equivalent to black belt) and i got to red belt in karate (right before black belt at my studio).
I'm in a couple of clubs at school, but i'm not in any leadership position in any of them.
I'm enrolled in the Delayed Entry Program for the Marines, but i'm planning on getting out if I get into a good college. Also, I'm applying for NROTC through the marines. I'm hoping to get a NROTC scholarship and go to navy med school.

AP Classes I have taken (All taken my junior year): AP Biology B/B (5 on Ap exam)
AP Psychology B/A (5 on AP exam)
AP Calculus AB A/A (5 on AP exam)
Senior Schedule: H. Physics, English 12, Auto Shop, AP Gov/Econ, AP Statistics

I see a lot of people saying that it's almost impossible to get into UCSD with my GPA, but will my SAT scores make up for it? I had some terrible luck with teachers my sophmore year, plus I did some stupid stuff and didn't concentrate on school. Will they see that I tried harder and did better my junior year and consider that? If UCSD is out of reach, what UC's would I have a better chance at? I'm planning on doing pre-med, so are there any colleges outside of UC that would be good for me? (I don't know much about colleges) Thanks.

ahh i edited too many times and it won’t let me edit anymore (sorry i’m having a semi-nervous breakdown). I forgot to include the classes I took.
9th grade I took
honors bio, english, alg2/trig.
regular spanish, pe, health/life skills
10th grade I took
honors english (the teacher that screwed me over) world history, math analysis/calc a
Regular chemistry (ran out of h. chem spots and students were chosen by lottery) digital imaging, and spanish 2.
11th grade
AP biology, AP psychology, AP calculus AB
Regular english, u.s history, and spanish 3 (that 10th grade english teacher screwed me over here too by not recommending me for honors classes)
Senior schedule is in post above.
I know it may seem like I’m making excuses by blaming that one teacher, but the majority of people in that class got a C. Take into account that this was an honors class filled with people who actually tried and cared about their grades.

^It is almost impossible for you to get into UCSD with that gpa. See for yourself…
[UC San Diego Comprehensive Review Admission Process: Freshman Selection, Fall 2010](http://www.ucsd.edu/prospective-students/freshmen/eval-process.html#process)
As you can tell, academics matters a lot at UCSD. The curve varies from year to year but from what i hear is that a score of 7800 will get you in.

How do I determine my points for each section? is a 3.5 GPA 3500 points? Would i get max points for required exams with 2190 SAT I and 790/720 SAT II?

^I’m not that much of an expert on UCSD. You should post this on the UCSD forum for advice from more knowledgeable sources.

Ahhhh. UCSD was my first choice but looks like I should look into other colleges.

Another question: Should I include that I’m in the Delayed Entry Program for the Marines in my application? Would it look better because it shows I’m dedicated or would it look worse showing that I’m considering going into the military instead of college. I’m mostly enrolled to try and get that NROTC scholarship, but if I can’t get into a decent college I think I might just serve and use money from the GI Bill to go to college

to calculate how much you earn for the testing, add up your scores and multiply by 0.8.

few questions for you, and I currently go to UCSD

Do you have an upward trend in GPA? your SATs and SAT 2’s are definitely high enough to be a UCSD student. But you are correct that your GPA is a bit lacking. Also your AP scores are strong. Be aware when applying to UCSD all bio majors are impacted now. So it might be best to apply as a chemistry major and then switch to biology if that is your preference down the line, since you intend pre-med. If you have any other questions let me know. Also UCSD loves community service. So I would say your service to your church helps you a lot. Are you a california resident? UCI is also a great school to me a pre-med at. UCSD is extremely competitive and as of now I am working my butt of to earn high marks. So just keep that in mind. Competition at UCI is much easier. And it all reality, it does not matter where you go to ungrad for admission into medical school. If you can earn a strong GPA and high MCAT with the necessary shadowing, research, community service, and leadership roles, you will be a strong applicant to any medical school.

thanks ooitsrich, you helped me regain some hope of getting into UCSD :D

I would say there’s definately an upward trend in my GPA, because of how terrible my sophmore year was. I got a 4.1 weighted my junior year, and all classes were academic and should count towards UC GPA. And yes, i am a california resident. I know undergrad doesn’t really matter and UCI was actually my second choice, but I just really like San Diego :)

i’m in the same position as you MeAndHobbes =)
