What are my chances of getting into US Naval academy, West Point, coast guard acad?

You don't look like a solid canidate. You lack sports, leadership, and course rigor. Those are some of THE most important aspects in the admissions proccess. Once they see you have 14 clubs, they'll reject you on the spot. They aren't looking for someone who can go to a classroom after school, put their name on a list, and say they are in a club. They are looking for an individual who has commitment to a club. For example I am on my high school's debate team, and have been on it since I started high school. I became captain in my sophomore year. That alone outweighs you being just a member of 14 misc clubs. Anyone can sign their name on a club list, how many can utilize leadership traits to run the club?

Also, I noticed there was a previous post saying you would have more trouble getting into army than navy. They don't know what the hell they are saying. Navy has the lowest admissions rates of all 5 service academies. In fact, the only school's with lower admission rates than navy are the ivy's and a music school.

Make sure you want a service academy. It isnt for everyone. You need to be sure you can explain to a group of people why you want to serve this great country of ours.

NAVY BEAT ARMY!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I am forced to add onto my previous post.

You said "Im sorry but I know for a fact I can get into both those schools. Or atleast have a good chance in doing so. "

This is another reason why you won't get in. Let us analyze 1/3 of the motto for army an navy.

Honor-By that statement you made above, you lack honor. For four years strait you will have people yelling at you that you can't succeed. If you snap like that, I wish you best of luck with your leader.

Also in response to that statement....you still need a congressional nomination. Depending on your state, that can be an extremely difficult task. Especially if you live in California where you have marine and naval bases. Because everyone will want a service academy. If your parents are ex/in-military you can go strait through a presidential nomination.

Next everyone applying for science programs at the service academies excel in science. Meaning they aren't just sending in a project to INTEL, they get summer internship programs there. They don't waist there time taking classes called "science project," they work in research positions at major universities. I hope you are taking atleast some form of calc. Try to get a ton more AP's in there. What about language? Demand for a second language at the academies is increasing.

I want you to understand that these academies are difficult. Don't assume you are a shoe in. IMHO, USNA, USMA, USCGA, USAFA, USMMA are THE best schools in the world. They don't just prepare you academically, but they prepare you as someone with leadership, honor, respect, duty, and pride. I'd hire somone from USNA over Harvard anyday.

Tomhls, what in the world are you basing your conclusions off of?

Honor is not about the discipline to refrain from snapping at somone.
Many cadets and midshipmen had more than 10 activities throughout highschool. The OP already explained involvement in 2 sports, and mentioned enrolment in AP/honors courses.

Andyboy, what leadership possitions have you held? Being in a "leadership club" is nice, but what leading have you actually done? This will be an important question from anyone in admissions.

Ahh well raimius I have started my own club in my freshmen year. It is called the Culinary Connosuire club. Its where we go from eatery to eatery and rate food. And then advertise those in our school newspaper which I most proudly write for. I am also a representative in the Globe club which I have been doing since freshmen year. We usually do beach cleanups each year and recycling programs. I am also the head lighting and sound technician for my schools plays and drama performances since my sophmore year. I am also involved in leadership club where we have fundraisers to collect money for scholarships. And I am also a proud member of the Italian club. Where we learn all about Italy’s traditions and learn about Italy’s cuisine and such. I am also a proud mathletes member and have been so for quite some time (fresh year). I am also in chess club (for fun, even though it doesn’t benefit anyone but myself for pleasure). I am also taking Japanese as a class (on top of taking spanish) I am also fluent in Greek (which you all may know is an EXTREMELY challenging language to learn. In result I am also in Japanese club. Last but not least of these is SADD (students against destructive decisions) such as drunk driving awareness, fight against aids, etc.

And in order to be in INTEL science research for the most part you need to be in the SCIENCE RESEARCH CLASS the first 2 years to know how to conduct research. And not be a mediocre dumball that thinks he has a shot at INTEL without the PROPER COACHING. My INTEL science research project already involves an internship I am in now. I have 2 mentors. AND I have a project benefiting the Navy.

And just for YOU tomhls123 I can already tell you wont be a great leader for making such blank assumptions like that. You dont know what clubs I am in. Nor do you know how good of an athlete I am. I am an exceptional wrestler and a great sprinter (Did i mention I throw shotput? AND IM A SPRINTER) You can only imagine. Yes I did say something awhile ago that was lacking of honor. Yes I do realize it was an ignorant comment. And I do so wish I could take it back.

(Just to let this out I am sorry for saying you wouldn’t be a great leader, I am just stating a point like you stated about me.)

And please do not judge me if you dont know me. Yes I need a nomination, im no dummy. It wont be a problem. But please do understand that your not the only one that wants to go there and you cant FLIP OUT on every person you see in your eyes isnt fit for the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Or any other academy for that manner.

Im not being ignorant when saying this. But I am a leader.

andyboy23 i think your Awesome! If i you dont have a chance to make it into USNA, i should forget about even applying.

Thankyou Marlene I really do appreciate the support. If I am accepted into USNA I hope we will meet.

John McCain got into the Naval Academy and he was an angry kind of guy, so andyboy should fit in just fine.

Andyboy - Hope you get into the academy of your choice. If it does not work out I recommend that you also look hard at ROTC (even as a back up while applying to the Academy). It a good deal (they pay tuition, stipend, and books) especially if you go to a $$$$$ school. You get the same commission as an Academy graduate (although as far as date of comission you go behind Academy officers). It used to be crucial to be an alum of the Academy to advance in the service but since the size of the military has grown it is not so anymore. I’ve served under both Academy and ROTC Officers and you could not really tell the difference.

(P.S. I was commissioned in ’82 via the NROTC program, served on a fast attack nuclear submarine as a Navy Nuke and served with many fine officers from both commissioning paths. Good luck!)

I know others have spoken on this comment but let me add my 2 cents:

NOBODY knows for a fact that they can get into a service academy. This year, the Naval Academy had a 50% increase in applications for the same # of appointment slots. Their acceptance rate dropped to about 7-8%. It is among the lowest in the nation.

Course riggor is EXTREMELY important. Calculus is way better to take than prob/stats. also some high level science classes (AP Chem, AP Physics, etc)

Yes, you have “14 clubs” and 2 sports. As previous ppl have stated, the academies want leadership, not quantity, in EC’s. Others have said what I want to say on EC’s and Leadership, so I will say no more on that.

Just to let you know, I got in this year, the most competitive year so far, with a 690 math and 540 CR, 3.7ish GPA. BUT I was captain of the football team for 3 years, Captain of the track team, had a bunch of Leadership in boy scouts, but I didn’t participate in any other extracurriculars. (a note: My friend who did a lot of clubs, not many sports, was Battalion Commander of JROTC and an Eagle scout didnt get in.) I took AP Physics, AP Calc BC, and AP Gov’t my senior year, which no-doubt hepled.

All in All, GL, but don’t count on it.

I really hope you dont get in why did you post a question and then get mad when someone gives you an answer. did you just want people to get on here and tell you how awesome your application is gonna look. andyboy your a complete ******.

you seem very well rounded. An up in the grades would help you that much more, because of the intense amount of competition.
I would also like to know my status: im a junior in high school, also a korean american.my gpa is estimated to be 3.4-3.5gpa(out of 5 scale).3.0 freshman, 3.5 soph. 3.8 junior. It is very low, i know that, because i was not very motivated during my freshman year, and began to prepare for the military colleges during freshman year when it was a bit late.My practice sat scores for now are 700-math/600-writing/570 reading. I am still studying for the SATS and expect improvements. i have participated in 1 year of winter track, will have played 3 years of tennis(2jv, 2varsity) at the end of this year and i have done wrestling for 2 years so far. I am in the ASA club/chess club/archery club/ and adventure club. I have volunteered for the korean american census bureau, MILAL(korean program in helping disabled children and adults),new vision, and currently firefighting for my township. I am an active church-goer,and part of the Praise Band. I have been told by many that i have a great personality(puts me into a good place for interviewing), funny, very kind, caring, determined.
My personal goals are in chronological order: Accepted into summer seminar for either USMA/USNA, receiving a nomination from a political figure, then finally enrolling into USNA/USMA.
Feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Your academics are pretty weak, unfortunately. Most people who are appointed have a 3.5+ on a 4.0 scale. Your math SAT looks good, but the reading section is below average. ECs and leadership look decent to me.

Have you talked to an admissions liason yet?

yeah i very much realize that, and i regret not realizing my goal before freshman year everyday. Im hoping to move it up to a 3.5-3.7 during my senior year. And I am in progress for my SATS right now, so i am hoping to raise all my scores up. I want the reading to get to atleast a 600.Im not getting my hopes up at all, but i really do hope for atleast an invite for one of the prep schools.
Are you currently enrolled in one of those 2 colleges, or an alumni?
And no i have not talked to the admissions liason. Do they just tell me what level i need to get to and all? im not exactly sure what it means to talk to an admissions liason

I am an Air Force Academy grad. Admissions Liasons are the people that serve as an intermediary for questions and evaluations between candidates and the academies. I know USNA calls them “Blue and Gold Officers.” They usually help out candidates and also conduct a mandatory interview.

oh yeah ive heard of them.they do the interviews during your application process i believe? But anyways, how am i as of now, under your standards. I want to either enroll in the academy, prep school, or foundation school at the least.

tomhls123- You know what you’re talking about, I agree with what you said 100%. I am also a junior in high school and I have wanted to be in the USCGA since I was in middle school. I only have about a 3.6 GPA, which lowered since last year … But my other activities are the reason I would get into the school. My academics are too low, though I do take some honors and AP courses. I have been the captain of my gymnastics team since my sophomore year, and I was the captain of my volleyball team this year. I also have played two years of lacrosse. I have gotten varsity letters for all three sports since my freshman year. I also traveled to Indianapolis this past summer because I was nominated for a thing called the NFHS National Student Leadership Conference. I stayed there for four days and learned more about becoming a better leader. I represented New Hampshire with 5 other high school delegates and at this conference we did incredible things to give back to Indianapolis, like community service in the 100 degree weather for the schools in need, or making an overall impact on others’ lives. I was nominated because of my commitments to my community and sports, and also some academics. To whoever left this post- those are only some of the things that I have achieved in high school, but that is what military academies look for. I don’t think you realize that you will be challenged beyond what you can imagine. And it sounds like you want to be accepted into one of these academies because you want to be able to “say” you got accepted. It doesn’t sound like you actually want this. This is my passion, though I have no confidence of getting into the academy, I think that any person like me that can handle challenges deserves to get into a military academy over any preson like you.

Did you get accepted?

Most of them are correct in what they are saying. I am going to be applying to West Point or the Naval Academy sometime next year. It is very difficult to get into the Academies but the Naval Academy had over 20,000 applicants this year! I happen to live in California so I am going to have a rough time getting a nomination considering all the bases around here. It takes more than 14 clubs to get into the Academies. It’s hard enough to get in, but staying there is one hell of a challenge. The Plebe Chemistry course is a class that weeds out everyone that doesn’t have the determination to get through it.

Granted, I am not at the Academy I just know people who attend them. It is challenging but not impossible. I know what you are going through - having people tell you that you aren’t going to get in. So what? Apply and see if you CAN get in. If you are really serious about this huge step from civilian life to military life then if you don’t get in this year apply next year. Or you can do what I will be doing if I don’t get in first time around - attend a university that has an ROTC program of the branch you would like to serve in.

Please, be very serious about this though. Military life isn’t for everyone. 75% of Americans no longer can ever qualify for serving the the military due to lack of high school diploma, medical reasons, or they are not physically fit enough for the rigors of military life.

Its a long and challenging road to get there but it is rewarding if you stick though it until the end. I can’t wait for my chance to prove everyone around me wrong by getting into West Point or the Naval Academy. Don’t let people hold you back, believe in yourself, and do what needs to be done in order to get you where you want to go in life.

Don’t take no for an answer if you really want this. Strive for what you are passionate about; have honor, faith, respect, and dignity. This is what make a true soldier andyboy23. Hope you join and maybe we will serve along side all those before us. My wishes that you succeed in all your endeavors and overcome all obstacles put in your path. God bless you and God bless the USA.

That,s what i thought. I literally made an account to make that point but apparently you already did.

People like you discourage me. im a junior too wanting to apply but my GPA was a 1. in freshman year im a junior now with a 2.8 :(. i was on honor roll every month sophomore year and end up with that crap. i though AP classes would help but that,s only for QPA. no one looks at that sadly. i play tennis. drill team pretty much restricts me from playing sports. i got kicked out of tennis last year for being late once. ridiculous. im going to try wrestling senior year.
