So I’m in my last summer of high school and lately college has been on my mind. I lived in India for the first part of my life but thankfully my family decided to take a leap of faith and move to the land of opportunity, specifically Texas where we have lived long enough for us to become residents. So here is a little information on me, I attend one of the most competitive public schools in all of Texas, I’m really good at math, physics and computers but I am terrible at english and writing as you can probably tell from this ill written post but that aside, I do OK in school. My rank is 89/200(but I would’ve been in the top of my class if it weren’t for freshman year). I really excel in mathematics and science but other than that I suck at everything else. I got a 2160 on the SAT but I am sure that i can bring it up to the mid 2200s or the low 2300s by the end of the summer. My senior year I am taking AP Gov/Eco, AP english 4, AP bio, AP chem and another class were you do real research and write papers and stuff. I intend to go into computer science or engineering not sure which doe. I really want to get into UT Austin but have heard that only people in the top 7% which unfortunately I would’ve been a part of if I had not given up the first year and a half of high school. What are my chances of getting in?

Try to raise your rank as much as possible. Unfortunately it is the most important aspect of your application. However, a low rank isn’t insurmountable. If your high school really is one of the most competitive in the state, UT admissions will most likely be aware of that, and have a mountain of data compiled for how students from your school perform at Austin.

Your SAT/ACT are both above the 75th percentile so that’s already excellent. What specific majors are you currently thinking about?

@danfer91 Wait so if your high school is very competitive that can make up for a low rank? I go to the number 1 public high school in my state, but my rank is not that high (15-20) percent. I am OOS. So does my high school being top counteract my low rank?

No, I’m afraid not. Maybe if you were top 10-12 percent.

You’re OOS @SternBusiness so the rank rule doesn’t apply to you. Texas residents get auto admission to UT if they are top 7% of their high school class.

My high school is very well known throughout the state and it is known to be extremely competitive.

I am leaning towards majoring in computer engineering but if that doesn’t work out aerospace engineering is my second choice.
