I am currently in the process of applying to Yale and am wondering what my chances really are. I received a score of 34 on the ACT and am currently first in my class out of 347. I am the captain of two varsity sports and president of my school's National Honor Society. I only have one year of a foreign language and sacrificed a second year in order to take 5 AP's for a total of 12 over my high school career. Was that a good or bad decision? My weighted GPA is 4.457 and uw is 3.985. Any and all answers are appreciated and thank you for taking the time to respond.

2 years of foreign language is required for most colleges. Try to take something online right now.

Yale would constitute a High Reach.

Your ACT, Class Rank, and GPA are up to Yale’s par. However, your extracurriculars are not. NHS is good, but sports don’t look nearly as good as academic teams, assuming you aren’t being recruited. Yale has no requirements for foreign language, but one year still doesn’t look good.

EC’s are the least transparent and the most unpredictable item on the application. No outsider knows for sure. Apply away. GL

Thanks for the feedback! I’ll likely study Spanish independently now.

Yale is a reach. Once you are within the range with academics, you’ll need to convince the adcom using ECs, recs and essays, which will make it or break it.
