I will be applying for fall 2010 admission.
I have GPA over 4.0, a 33 on the ACT, and have several leadership positions in my school.
I will have taken 9 AP classes by the time I graduate high school. I am in the top 2% of my class.
What are my chances for receiving either the Presidential or Old Gold Scholarships offered at the University of Iowa? I know I qualify for both of them, but will I actually receive either of them?
Thanks!

It sure sounds like you would get the Old Gold at least. There are approx. 350 of those given out. You would need to apply for the Presidential Scholarship to be awarded an Old Gold Scholarship. They go to the top 350 or so applicants.

The Presidential are more competitive for sure. There were only 19 of those for 2009. I think that would depend on your essays you write and your experiences you write about. Since it is pretty subjective, it would be hard for anyone to tell you your chances, I bet.

My son got the presidential 2010. Stats:
Male, 1/173 students, 34 ACT, National Merit Finalist, Varsity Baseball, Basketball and Track, set some school records in track, competitive travel baseball until he broke his elbow :(, Senior class secretary and treasurer, several smaller clubs, WYSE, academic competitions, National Honors Society, National Spanish honors society, Habitat for Humanity, Works at a baseball academy and is a youth umpire, plus a few other charity and awards. Also, he was born in Iowa city and both parents graduated from there if that helped, I don’t know.

when i was applying i was told by a University Honors Representative that because everyone applying is so qualified (have to have 30 act, etc) the selection committee puts a lot of stock in the essay and short answer pieces. So if you write a good essay you should get it

My son has just about identical credentials…would his being an Illinois resident prevent him from qualifying?

^
No, many have recieved the award who are not residents of Iowa.

Your son may have had a decent shot, but all the awards were given out this year already. The application deadline was in january or february, can’t remember right now.

The application deadline for the Presidential and Old Gold was actually back in the first week of December.

thanks, gole1296, you are right. They notified old gold recipients in february I believe and then presidential the next month. This semester has been a blur of applications.
