What are my chances? (one IVY, a few private/publics)

I know most of these take a long time to read so I'm just going to make this as short and concise as possible:

GPA: unweighted 3.85

Top 5% of class l

800 Math
780 Reading
710 Writing

Only got 700's on both my SAT II's

Working on my eagle scout now

Will have 8 AP's by the end of HS, passed all of them, got 5's on a few.

I've taken 5 classes at our local college at night after work, I'll have 8 by the end of this year.

I work about 20 hours a week as the manager of the wholesale part of a business, and drive 30 minutes each way.

Compete in weightlifting, hold a few national records

Microsoft Server maintenance certifications as well as other certifications from Microsoft

And I'm in the standard school activities (JSU, NHS, etc)

I'm applying for a few schools:

University of Pennsylvania (Early Decision)

UF

UM, Ann Arbor

UNC Chapel Hill

Duke

Case Western

Tulane

Northwestern

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Sam

Solid chance, the only thing that might slightly hurt is the 3.85 UW GPA, but you’re a definitely a qualified candidate.

My GPA isn’t a strong point to say the least, but I’m hoping that getting all a’s my Junior year with an impossible schedule helps me out. I just didn’t try at all my freshman year unfortunately.

Thank you sir.

I would say that your work experience and your eagle scout designation will make you a very interesting candidate.

And for schools that don’t count the writing section of the SAT, you basically have perfect SAT scores to boot !!!

I would say that you will definitely get into Michigan, Tulane, and Case Western.

And UF if you are from Florida.

Penn however, might be a different story, not because you are not super-qualified, but rather, because their acceptance rate is so low, and many of the applicants are almost super human.

Thanks floridadad55, and for what it’s worth, I live in Florida.

I’m really hoping I’ll get into Penn, but optimistically I doubt my chances exceed 40% even with early decision.

Bring up that GPA and your chances are 75% + at everywhere except Penn and Duke.

In at UF, UNC Chapell Hill, UM Ann Arbor, Tulane, Case Western, and UMich.
Northwestern’s a low reach for you, but it’s a reach for anyone.
Duke’s a mid reach for you, as your ECs and GPA aren’t quite where they should be… Well, the same goes for Northwestern there, but it’s still not as much of a reach as Duke.
Penn is a high reach for you, as it is for anyone. As an earlier poster said, a lot of its applicant pool is “superhuman” meaning they’ll be entrepreneurs already making 30K a year, or have done published medical research, etc. However, the fact that Penn accepts almost half of its class ED will definitely help you.
If you can write great essays and keep your grades up, your chances increase a bit. Good luck!(:

Chance me everyone? I know my reaches are reaches, but they’re really just for closure…=P

UPenn- You have a shot especially since it’s ED, but like most Ivies it’s a reach because at that level admission is somewhat random. I advise retaking your SAT 2’s. Take easy ones like Math II, English Literature (if you’re good at CR) or if you’ve taken APWH or APUSH, US History or World History; Math and those histories have big curves.
