-Started attending SMC in Summer 2009

-The thing is that I didn't do really well in my pre-req courses since philosophy is really hard at SMC ): I think this is the reason that will lower my chances at UCLA. However, UC Berkeley does NOT have any pre-reqs for Philosophy major. They do, but none of them was offered at my college.

-Took 22 units in fall 2009 and took 23 units in fall 2010..if this helps.

-Finished my IGETC by spring 2010.

So what do you think my chances are? My first choice school is either UC Berkeley or UCLA. It doesn't really matter.

There were 4 pre-reqs for UCLA, and I got 2 A’s, 1 B and 1 C… I was so depressed after I got a C, since it was my first C and since I got it in my pre-req course. Would that completely ruin my chances at UCLA? How about UC Berkeley? ): I think that my GPA is still above average since the ave. GPA for UCLA philosophy transfers was 3.54 last year, I believe. But I’m worried because of the my C. Am I just screwed?

So your GPA for pre-reqs is 3.25…I still think you have a really good shot @ UCLA. Admit rate was 60.10% so you gotta think those that didn’t get in were situations where students were missing math, under 60 units, low GPA’s, missing pre-reqs, etc… So even though you got a C you still completed all pre-reqs and your overall GPA is higher than average.

@SMCguy: Thank you! I appreciate it. That made my day. I was worried even though I knew that it’s not going to change anything. I really hope that I get into either Berkeley or UCLA… Anyone else? ):

I’m in a similar situation…but I applied as an Anthro major. I suggest you search the old threads and see who was rejected and accepted and why. That’s what I did with Anthro…and I saw that everyone over a 3.3+ who completed all pre-reqs was accepted. This year will be more competetive of course…but all of this helps to pass time =)

Thank you again. I assume that you go to smc too? did you do TAP as well? I didn’t do TAP and I’m regretting that. I heard that last year was the most competitive and this year won’t be as competitive as last year… well that’s what I heard from “SMC counselor”, so I don’t really believe tho haha…

@SMCguy: sorry that I keep bothering you, but do you know if “English 21A” at SMC is transferable? I took English 21A in Fall 2009, and I got a B. From what I see on the catalogue, it’s not UC-transferable, so it won’t affect my GPA and my chances, right? ):

@berkeleyphil I got accepted into the scholars program, but decided not to do TAP. I hope you’re right about it not being as competitive…makes sense because last year everyone went back to school because of the economy…this year it seems like more ppl are working.

I know for sure that English 21A is not UC-transferable and I believe it will not affect your GPA.

Hey! I applied to UCB phil with a 3.74 and was admitted for spring. Hence, I am still waiting to start at Cal…8 days and counting! lol. Anyway, you’re right that Berkeley rarely has any articulated philosophy prereq classes from CCC’s. I think when I checked assist, there were like 7 CCC’s that had the prereqs. However, how have you done in your philosophy classes and how many have you taken? Also, how is your grade trend? i.e. when did you get that C?

Judging by the info above, I’d say you’re a longshot to a 50/50 chance at UCLA due to the prereqs, but you may have as good or even a better chance at Cal depending on your answers to my questions above.

My grade trend is pretty much steady. It’s not upward nor downward However, my semester GPA in Fall 2010 was a bit higher than any other semester grades. I took 7 classes in Fall 2010, and I got 5 A’s, 1 B and 1 C… And I got a C in my pre-req in Fall 2010. I took 4 philosophy classes. Do you really think that my chances at UCLA are that low? ): I’m depressed now haha…

Aww don’t be depressed! It’s just that prereq GPA is important at all the UC’s. I think you have a solid shot because your overall GPA is solidly above the mean. Considering that you did get that C in your most recent semester, that does kind of hurt you. If you explained it in your personal statements (or somewhere), that helps.

Honestly, you’re tough to chance. You’re so borderline. I’ve chanced and been chanced dozens of times since I joined CC, but your case is tough. Imo, it’ll come down to your personal statements.

@emilsinclair9: I know! I think that I’m so borderline too… But I also heard that GPAs in pre-reqs are only important if your major is impacted… but i’m sure it’s still very important. Ahhh… I really wanted to go to UCLA. Do you know the average GPA for Philosophy transfers at Berkeley? I heard that it’s around 3.6 or something although I’m not sure…

From what I remember, on UC Statfinder it says that the average philosophy major admitted to UCB has ~3.7. Either way, it’s higher than UCLA’s by a decent amount.

Anyway, now that I think about it, with a 3.63, I find it hard to think you wouldn’t get into at least 1 of the two. Phil is relatively easy to get into, so again, I’d say 50/50 or so.

Thank you so much! I just wanted to get into one of the two, but I prefer UCLA since I live in LA. Ahhh… How is Berkeley? You didn’t start your classes yet right? But didn’t you take some classes in summer? I remember reading some of your posts.

damn, good memory! lol. I took Genetics during summer because I was planning to double major with psychology. Ironically, now I’m explicitly a psych major. Berkeley is awesome imo, but as you know, I don’t have that much experience with it yet.

Thus far I’ve contacted the coach of the Lightweight Crew Team to be a rower, and I’m thinking of joining a fraternity or doing research if I can find a position I’m interested in. Overall, the campus is gorgeous, and tbh I couldn’t see myself anywhere else. Cal has a real vibe! You should definitely tour/check it out if you haven’t yet!

lol haha actually u helped me a lot wid my majors and stuff if u remember. Is it really easy to change majors at Berkeley? Because if I transfer to Cal I’d like to switch my major to poli-sci. I have completed their major pre reqs. And I’ve been to Berkeley once and I really liked it there lol
