What are my chances? PHILOSOPHY MAJOR.

People will always give you different or ambiguous answers about switching majors. I’ll be extremely blunt about it though lol: At Cal, it’s very easy to switch majors in the same college.

Since psych and phil are both in L&S, the switch was really easy. Psych is impacted and “capped”, but that just means you have to have a 3.2+ in your prereqs.

It really is easy to switch majors tbh. Although, to be fair, I did want to double major with phil back when I applied.

Bump!
Anybody else who can chance me? ): I’d really appreciate it!

I think you have good shot at both UCLA and Berkeley. Your gpa is higher than average.

You have a decent shot for both. My friend got into Berkeley with a 3.6 (philosophy major) and I checked the UCLA site for philosophy majors and their avg is 3.54. It should be enough to get you into UCLA at least.

@xViral: Thank you very much! That really makes feel better (: However, the problem is that I didn’t do well in my pre-req courses…would that affect me largely? :/

Jesus, why do you want Cal and LA so bad?

^ is there something wrong with that?

I am in a similiar situation. I have a 3.67 GPA as a philosophy major. I have a strong upward trend, however. In my last 40 units I recieved a 4.0 and my grades prior were not nearly as good. I do not have any substandard grades however. I was denied to the three UC’s I applied last year because I didn’t have my math requirement completed. I have all of my IGETC completed now and of the 3 of 4 prereqs for my major at UCLA, I have A’s in all. None of the community colleges I attended offered the 4th prereq. I have a 4.0 in all my major courses outside of the 3 prereqs. I know that I should probably get into UCLA, but what about Berkeley? Any ideas?

@catfoodjar: Definitely in at Berkeley. I say that because you have A’s in all of your prerequisites (except for the one not offered, which won’t affect you anyway). You have IGETC completed -and- a 4.0 in your last 40 units. Great upward trend.

Well thanks for your optimism! That definitely gives me hope! It was pretty disappointing having to wait another year with all my classes taken already.

I empathize. I’m a spring admit and had to wait an extra semester. Good luck, my friend!

Thank you. I appreciate it.

I’m also a philosophy major. I have a few questions, if you all don’t mind answering them:

first, does it matter at all that my school doesn’t offer any of the prereqs for Berkeley philosophy?

second, is it accurate to say that if I keep my 4.0 I’ll be basically set for acceptance at Cal and UCLA? thanks.

go to other cc’s and take the Berkeley pre-reqs

no, just because you got 4.0, you are not set for acceptance to UCLA AND Cal.

Most community colleges don’t offer prereqs for philosophy that Berkeley wants so that won’t be an issue. And more than likely you will be in at both.

@ briceies: No, it doesn’t matter. If your CCC doesn’t offer the prereqs, it won’t affect you. Literally 7 or 8 out of 60+ CCC’s offer the corresponding philosophy prereqs.

And if you have a 4.0, you’re pretty much guaranteed admission with a phil major.

chill! thanks, friends.

To answer the Berkeley dude’s question: No, I don’t have any problems w/ you choosing LA and Berkeley. I am asking why “you guys” want them so bad?

Got another question: why do you put my question in the negative zone? If you argue that you did not, please ask yourself why you asked me if there were “anything wrong w/ that”? Did I imply that there were anything wrong?

I hope you ignore my question, as I am believed that a phil major cannot argue against such a strong sound argument. =)

^ sorry but you obviously said “why do ‘you’ want”. And that “Jesus” kind of implies something is wrong. I’m just saying :)

I think English is his second language. So he probably didn’t mean to come off negative.
