Hey everyone, here are my top choices:
UF
FSU
UM
FIU
UCF
Safeties:
Rollins
Tampa
USF
As of right now my gpa is a measly 2.8 as a sophomore. However my weighted gpa is 3.8 because I take some rigorous classes. In all honesty I hope that I have enough time to improve my gpa. Realistically, how much can my gpa improve?
In addition to the GPA I scored a 25 on practice ACT and a 1500 on practice Sat with no prior experience or studying.
I know I can and should improve these scores. I have a lot of EC I play 2-3 sports a year on varsity, around 300 hours of community service as a sophomore, volunteer at fire station, active within my church. I also run a small business in which me and 2 other friends run a professional website.
I take 1 AP now and the rest honors. I will be upgrading to 2 AP next year and all honors. I’m just nervous that my unweighted GPA sucks and I know I am intelligent and so do my teachers. I think it is just the stress of all my EC and not enough effort. Please provide some advice to finish the sophomore year strong and have a great junior year. I just do not want to end up at a community college.
Thanks and keep in mind I am a Sophomore!!
If you can bring your GPA up and increase your test scores it’ll help your chances. Also having good teacher recs and strong essays would be helpful in offering the addmission counselors more insight into you as a student beyond just your test scores. If you score a 4 or 5 on AP tests, sending those scores to the colleges can also help to compensate for a lower grade in the course because it shows your mastery of the material. Your ECs are impresive and will definietly help for schools that are hollistic in the review process.
Realistically with mostly A’s in the future how much will my GPA go up heading into senior year? Having AP are good but my expectation is that if I am able to get A in my AP’s for next year along with a couple other A’s and a B or 2 I would be able to raise my GPA to a 3.3-3.5 unweighted by senior year.
@JT199811 - The ECs are nice, but you might want to cut back on them somehow if your grades are suffering as a result. 2.8 is pretty low these days. You really need to work to get that unweighted GPA up over 3.0 by the middle of your senior year. You can still get accepted to a lot of 4-uear universities with a 2.8, but you have greater options with a 3.0+ Gotta get that SAT score up if you want to submit an SAT score. Your practice ACT score is better than your practice SAT score. If you can get that ACT to a 27 and your GPA to over 3.0, then lots of colleges will accept you.
Can I get like a match reach type of thing for each school. That would be very helpful. Also, ideally how much can my GPA go up before the start of my senior year?
I would say if you can get GPA up to 3.3-3.5 and maybe around a 29 on the ACT or like 1900 plus basically every school should be a match besides UM (assuming that’s u of miami) I would say that’s probably gonna be a low reach.
If you get basically straight A’s from now on, you should get to 3.3 unweighted. As for weighted, it depends on your choice of courses, but 4.2-4.3 isn’t impossible.
Your ACT is better than your SAT, so focus on the ACT and get your score up to a 27.
With 3.3 UW/4+W and ACT 27:
UF
FSU
=> both are reachable reaches, your odds are about 30%
UM
=> out of reach
FIU= safety; honors likely, with merit scholarship
UCF = match
Safeties:
Rollins=> not a safety, but a low reach/high match
Yes, but mostly you get all kinds of perks: better housing, smaller/more interactive classes, professors who know you by name, oftentimes trips/activities or a special lounge with free printing, and the best of all is priority registration, which ensures you’ll never have a professor who’s bad or a class at 8 am if you don’t want to, and will never be shut out of classes required for your major.
