Other: My Freshman year gpa was a 2.3, it rose to a 4.1 by the end of junior year. This could either make or break me...

You’re being way too optimistic. The UC gpa for students for accepted students last year was 4.01, and you think someone with a 3.67 gpa, decent scores, and average ec’s is an auto admit?

I’d say you have a 50% chance. I would probably just send in your ACT score, since it’s quite a bit better than your SAT score.

It isn’t supposed to be a checklist of things. Really good ec’s show passion and commitment. It’s much, much better to be very accomplished doing one thing than just to be average at a bunch of stuff.

That said, your ec’s are just fine for UCI. In fact, they’re probably better than average. What will hurt you a lot is your gpa. The upward trend you mentioned might help you a lot, but it’s tough to know.

Yeah hopefully that helps me… Do you think I should discuss this trend in my college essays? Maybe mention what motivated me to finally do better in school and what not. And also, should I apply to an easier major to increase my chances?

talk about why you couldn’t do as well at the start and the reason for the upward trend. (Family illness, accident, even laziness and realizing the need to work harder is a good reason imo)

someone tell me how in the holy mother of god a 710 on Chem, 610 on math, and a 1900 overall on an SAT is AVERAGE. Are you kidding me?

At the very least, you should be a shoe-in for UCI. I got in with a 1780 composite, three passed AP tests, 710 chem, 590 math II, and barely any community service.

From my understanding (and I still don’t understand this process very well) is that they’re looking for well-rounded individuals who look like they can succeed in college. Your application is a composite based on your essays, ecs, and your schoolwork. Your gpa may be a little low, by some people’s standards. (Mine was a 3.8 unweighted) but I think as long as you put your heart into your essays you should be fine.

wow a 3.8 unweighted gpa!? Thats higher than my weighted gpa… GPA is always number one priority so I don’t know about my chances. But thanks that post gave me some hope =]

“At the very least, you should be a shoe-in for UCI”

lol, no. A 3.67 UC gpa (which the OP has) is not at all the same as an UNWEIGHTED 3.8 gpa. By the way, high school gpa is by far the most important part of an application for UC schools.

The fact that you got in with a 1780 really doesn’t change the fact that the average admitted student has around a 1900 score.

“I still don’t understand this process very well”

No offense, but why are you acting like you do know a lot about it then?

Alright well the main reason my gpa is low is because i slacked off part of sophmore year. Freshman year was horrible but that isn’t counted in the gpa (thankfully!) so if I explain the upward trend in my grades and what finally motivated me to try harder in high school in my personal statement do you think that would help a lot!?

Is there anything I can do to get some hope??
