What are my chances... scholarships?

She received a letter in the mail, I don’t believe that it was on the portal, but I don’t monitor that. Gold scholarship, She was also offered honors program via letter.

@Midwestrowmom Is your D in-state? When did she apply? Thanks.

D19 is in state. Her scores are : ACT 35, UW gpa 4.0, W gpa about 4.7? NMSF. She was admitted into CSE. She applied first week of September. Gold scholarship is great, but hoping for more if she makes NMF. She will not qualify for need based aid.

D19 got an email from an admissions officer (recruitment) today congratulating her on her “outstanding scholarship package” and asking to set up a time to speak on the phone & answer any questions. First question will be: what scholarship package?! It’s the first we’re hearing of it. : ) Yay.

@coffeemomCO - did you check her my.U account? It might be included in the FA section.

@JBStillFlying we did check there but see no financial info.

@coffeemomCO @JBStillFlying What’s interesting is that I emailed an admissions counselor asking what kind of scholarships I qualified for, and she told me explicitly in the email that I can expect a $15,000/yr National Scholarship, and that the letter would be “in my hands in two weeks.” So idk if that means it’s official, but nothing has shown up in MyU yet.

@Bmahoney13 that sounds good! I noticed that their snail mail takes a while. I hope that arrives for you soon. We are waiting to hear what this scholarship package is… we are OOS and she is NMSF so I am hopeful!

@coffeemomCO So am I, only difference is I wasn’t a NMSF…We’ll see. If this scholarship is legit, I’m probably going to commit to the U, so who knows what could happen in a couple of weeks!

I would trust the UMN admissions person. Snail mail will be a larger envelope so may take a bit longer.

@JBStillFlying It was Alexandra Tsai, an admissions counselor and BA/MD program coordinator (I’m not in that, as an OOS, but to boost credibility). Do you think the scholarship is legit, or recruitment fodder?

I’m glad to see this thread. S19 got in but has seen nothing about financial aid. We will be curious to see if he is offered anything.

@BMahoney13 at #30 - do you honestly think an admissions counselor and program coordinator is going to promise money that isn’t there? They are less than forthcoming about money that IS there LOL. Just be patient - it’ll show up. UMN is a big bureaucracy so it can take awhile for scholarship info. to get to the recipient. They have to get through the current crop of NMSF’s first.

@coffeemomCO encourage your daughter to set up that time to speak on the phone with the admissions person. The first questions to be answered should be what scholarships and how much.

@JBStillFlying It’s not so much that it isn’t there, but like a “we’ll promise you money you could receive (at max)” as opposed to concrete, black and white awarding processes. That’s why I liked USF’s admissions process quite a bit. Not that I don’t have extracurriculars and the like, but USF didn’t care. It was: “Do you meet our score reqs? If yes, you’re in. If no, then you’re not.” and for money, “Do you meet our scholarship reqs? Yes? Here’s your money, guaranteed.”

I know life is full of gray areas, but these gray ares suck!

Well this does sound a bit grey because based on your above post it’s not clear whether they made a promise that you’ll receive a scholarship or that you’ll be considered for one. Big difference depending on what was said. For instance,

“You can expect to be considered for the National up to $15,000 / yr” doesn’t promise a scholarship.

“You can expect the National which has a max amount of $15,000 / yr.” promises some amount yet to be determined.

“you can expect the National amounting to $15,000 / yr.” promises a set amount.

All are subject to standard and reasonable caveats, of course, as all scholarship offers are.

The National isn’t set in stone as to amount - it can vary from something like $2,500 - 15,000 per year. So Scenario #2 above makes total sense but yeah, it can be frustrating. In the olden days it was a simple tuition differential but over the past few years has morphed into this highly complex calculation (and no one is sure how it’s done).

My son received $15k *4years for a total of $60K…assuming he maintains grades. Here are his stats if you want to have an idea. We are out of State. Big sports kid, Captain of Baseball team, Music Honor Society etc…

@kyledad how long after Oct 16th did you hear about the scholarships and how (email/portal) ?

@kyledad did you receive the scholarship info via snail mail?
Thanks

Snail mail for both acceptance and scholarship. Scholarship came about 2 weeks after acceptance

Merit scholarships came thru today for D19, via snail mail:

$15k/ year for 4 years National award
$5k/ year for 4 years Gold award
$1k study abroad… so, $81k overall awarded! That sure helps with the OOS tuition.

She has been accepted to college of engineering and to the honors program. She is NMSF. Act 35, SAT 1570. Sat chemistry 800, sat math level 2 800.
