What are my chances? (& some input please)

Hello everyone been looking around this great site learning a ton, this is my first post sorry if it is not the right place. Anyway I am a perspective transfer student intending on transferring Fall 2016 my stats are as follows.

GPA: 3.53, probably more like a 3.6-3.7 when I transfer
Intended Major: Economics (but thinking of double majoring with either Communication, International Relations or Organizational Studies)
IGETC: finishing Fall 2015
TAG: UC Davis Economics
Prerequisites: business calc Fall 2015, Stats & econ 1b Spring 2016

I visited UC Davis and absolutely loved it, plus they have aboxing team which I thought was awesome and I intend to join. I am applying to a few other schools but Davis is my top choice tied with Berkeley, with a slight edge toward Davis. I was just hoping to get some input from people on the following;

  1. is my gpa competitive for a transfer in economics
  2. is double majoring a bad idea at UCD
  3. Which second major would you recommend
  4. being that I will be 25 upon transferring, will I be an old man on campus
  1. Berkeley is obviously a really good school but because of math I would have to major in political economy, at Davis I can do regular full on economics. A friend of mine told me the prestige factor of Berkeley trump an Econ degree from UCD, is this true?
  1. So long as your GPA is high enough for TAG, you'll be fine. With the stats you've posted, without TAG you should still be competitive. TAG is always your best bet if you're set on transferring to Davis though, if you qualify.
  2. I'm a double major myself (CS and linguistics) and haven't had any serious problems come up. It will depend on what the exact majors are, but it's definitely doable.
  3. Depends on what you're interested in and what you want to do with your degree. Keep in mind that just because you're interested in something doesn't mean you have to major in it.
  4. You'll be on the older side, but not to the point where people will think anything of it. There was a veteran in one of my classes this past quarter who was also a transfer student, so he was around 25 as well. Nobody thought anything of it.
  5. It depends on what fields you want to go into. For some fields it might matter, but for many/most, it really doesn't. I can't think of a reason why Berkeley would give you such a significant edge over Davis that you shouldn't consider Davis, not for most circumstances anyway. Personally I would go with whichever is the better fit both as far as atmosphere and for which program most closely matches your interests.

I think you’ll be fine…

Thanks soooo much for the input! gave me a lot to think about and eased my mind a lot.
