I’m Looking Specifically to major in Computer Science or Geology with a focus on Geophysics.

CSU(s)

San Marcos - (Computer Science)
San Jose ST - ( Geology)
San Diego ST ( Geology/Comp. Sci)
Fullerton- (Computer Science/Geology)
Cal Poly Pomona- ( Geological Sciences/ CS)
CSUN- (CS/Geo)

UC(s)
Merced - (Computer Science)
Riverside- (Geology/CS)
Santa Cruz - (CS)

Location : S.California
Ethnicity : Asian/Pacific Islander
Grad Year : 2017

Mega-issue : I imploded in two classes (non-AP) and will most likely finish with a C in both, more than likely putting a dent in my GPA, and chances.

With notion to that issue, as well as Impacted majors, competitiveness, “meh” test scores and GPA, How will I fare in regards to admissions to these schools ? I know CSUSM has a agreement with my school district that essentially “prioritizes/gurantees” admissions to students who meet their minimum requirements. (3.0 GPA) Where can I improve ?

Thank you in advance fellow CC’ers.

Without your final grades, it is a guess but, here is mine:

San Marcos - (Computer Science) = Yes
San Jose ST - ( Geology) = Yes
San Diego ST ( Geology/Comp. Sci) = probably not
Fullerton- (Computer Science/Geology) = probably not
Cal Poly Pomona- ( Geological Sciences/ CS) = could go either way. Improve your odds by choosing undeclared as your 2nd choice major
CSUN- (CS/Geo) = could go either way

UC(s)
Merced - (Computer Science) = Probably
Riverside- (Geology/CS) = probably not
Santa Cruz - (CS) = unlikely

Good luck

SJSU/CSUSM: Match
CSUN: Match depending upon if non-locals will be accepted next year
CPP/CSUF/UCM: High Match
SDSU/UCR: Low Reach
UCSC: Mid Reach

@NCalRent @Gumbymom Thank you. I’m currently awaiting my scores for the most recent SAT and AP’s from May, but my GPA for this year was finalized. I received a 3.667 GPA for both semesters, so here is an updated A-G (W) :

10-12 A-G (W): 3.5909 GPA
UW : 3.3 (unchanged)

Now that my junior year grades are finalized, will it change up anything ? Thanks !

I stand by my chances.

@Gumbymom I apologize for bothering, but I have also decided to check out Sac State, NAU, and the Univ. of Arizona as well. How would I fare at these three schools ? Is there any other schools I should consider looking into ?

Thank you in advance.

Sac state looks like a Match, NAU a safety if affordable. UofA is probably a High Match.
Cal State East Bay for CS might be a school to look into since their graduates do well in the job market.

@Gumbymom Got it. Thank you.

Take a look at Sonoma and Chico as well. They are very residential and should be comfortably in reach.

@NCalRent @Gumbymom In Regard to SAT and ACT scores, what will I need to push the High Match/ Low Reach schools listed above (CSUF,UCM,CPP,UCR,SDSU) towards a more positive standing ? I plan to take the SAT once again in October (if possible) and an ACT in September, and I’m aware that the score that I’ve provided seemingly puts my chances in limbo. My EI I calculated with the scores I have don’t seem to help either at this time.

Thanks in advance.

Your EI according to your posted stats is around 4,000. This EI should be good enough for CSUF and CPP but much depends upon how impacted these programs are for next year. UCM is also possible. For SDSU aim for an EI of 4100+, so an SAT score of 1230+ or an ACT of 29+. These scores would also be competitive for UCR. Just have a couple of solid safety schools on the list.
Geology will be the far easier admit than CS at all these schools.

@gumbymom is spot on.nothing to add.

@NCalRent @Gumbymom Thank You !

@Gumbymom One last question : I will be most likely be paying a visit to CSUEB and other schools near the Bay Area next week, can I consider it a “Safety” school for Computer Science ?

East Bay is not an impacted campus, so yes consider it a safety school.
