What are my chances?- UCLA

I am extremely nervous about applications, but even more so about applying to UCLA because that would be the school I would ultimately like to go to. I will be applying this fall. It would be amazing if I could get some feedback on my application as far as GPA and EC goes. Thanks!

Transferring from CC
Major: Communications (planning on minoring in Comp Sci, putting the two together and go into marketing)

IGETC- on track
Major Rec- on track

GPA: 3.77 (will have a 3.8 after Fall Quarter- which counts)

EC:
1. Honors Program
2. Dean's List
3. Phi Theta Kappa
4. CCP (Cross Cultural Program)
5. Tennis
6. Volunteer at YMCA
7. Volunteer Note Taker (help disabled class members)
8. Tutor English in ESL center
9. Worked at Jamba Juice
10. Own my own marketing company
11. Have a side project making banners and flyers for local bands

there are a few more things but they would need more explanation and...yeaaa, feedback needed please!!

This may sound harsh, but you will not get into UCLA Comm. The department only looks at GPAs above a 3.9 and the averge GPA admitted last year was a 3.94 If you can do TAP I would suggest applying as a Comm major, but put a realistic major as a backup.

On a positive note…you have a good shot at UCB Media Studies, UCSD Comm is almost a sure in. If you’re set on UCLA I would suggest applying as a Soc major and try to double majoring in Comm.

I’d say apply, because you may get lucky – especially if you’re from a CA CC. That’s what I’m doing; I have a similar GPA (3.83) and a lot of executive positions/paid positions on campus as well as internships at city newspapers and with a CA governor candidate, so I’m going to try to emphasize my involvement in Communications-related EC’s (you should too). But like I said, it’s always worth a shot. Make sure those essays are spectacular!

Thanks guys, I am now really considering doing what SMCguy suggested with Sociology, but I’m not too sure how much more of a chance I would have at getting admission with that major. Really nervous :/

Honestly Communications is incredibly hard to get into. With a 3.77, although that’s a solid GPA normally, it probably (in all probability) won’t cut it.

I suggest applying into sociology too…or even philosophy which is (relatively speaking) much easier to get into.

escapevelocity, what do you intend on doing with your Comms major? I may go into SOc as well, but there are a ton of pre-reqs for that major I haven’t done.

Emil, its Kelli! Hey, what did you ever end up doing? Are you going to Cal next semester or are you already attending LA?

@ Kelli: Hey! Long time no talk! :D. I’m actually going to Cal next semester :/. I’m not sure if it was the “right” decision, but I’m hoping for the best. I’m taking a class there currently through Extension as well. Although, I’m going to UCLA for 4 days this weekend to see my gf lol.

What did u end up choosing? :)

planning on minoring in comp sci so i can kind of veer towards marketing. eventually get an mba, but thats further away lol.

which brings me to my now concern on which major to choose (because i would still plan on applying for communication/media studies for other UCs) which is similar enough to communications that the personal statement would make sense…
