What do you mean by “prep school”?

Preppy people attend. So my cousin says…

I would think there is a preppy population at most colleges, and UNC is no exception. You can hardly say the whole campus is preppy though.

That being said, you haven’t taken many AP classes and your scores seem really low… I think it’s a big stretch.

^I wouldn’t say big stretch. He has a 4.5 GPA. I haven’t known any instate student with 4.5+ to be denied, even if they had less than stellar test scores, not saying it doesn’t happen, but it isn’t typical.

I know a guy with a 1680 who got in with a 4.9 GPA. Another with a 4.6 and 1800. Given their GPAs were higher than the OPs, but a 4.5 is nothing to sneeze at. I say he has a fair shot, and with good essays and recs would probably get in.

That being said the SAT and ACT scores aren’t that great, and I would do my best to raise them in October. Shoot for 1300+ when it comes to CR/M and 1900+ if you add writing.

EDIT:Also 4 APs isn’t bad. That was the average from my HS for accepted students, with some having less.

I can’t really chance you, but as far as the “prep school” question, it depends what you mean by that. While students are primarily white, there are a lot of diverse groups on campus. They even have a quidditch team!(if you know what that is). I have a friend who goes there, and she says you can find pretty much any type of student organization. Knowing this, you shouldn’t be worried about the campus being “preppy”, and should focus on the fact that you will find others with similar interest.

Hope this helps

Ha ha, I was thinking christo was a girl because of the ballet mention… Forgive me if I’m wrong!

My best friend from high school had stats better than this and she got waitlisted, then rejected. I still think these stats look pretty mediocre, but I went to a high school where everybody was pretty psycho and took 7-8 APs, etc. Maybe if she is from somewhere out in the boonies this would look okay, but it definitely wouldn’t fly at my high school (for UNC). I know GPA is important, but if you can’t cut it on the SAT, that definitely detracts from it.

I would work on improving your SAT scores and write excellent essays. Your ECs and gpa are solid, however the low SAT scores slightly undermine the high gpa. I got in with an SAT score of 1810 and a gpa of 3.6, so you definitely have a chance but to have a HIGHER chance work on raising those scores.

For in-state, your scores are fine. I have friends that got in this year with lower GPAs and scores in the 1600s. UNC looks at a lot more than SAT scores; your ECs are great (especially the volunteer work).
