What are my chances? Very high GPA, very low SAT.

Hi,

I just wanted to know my chances at UChicago.

I have a 4.0 GPA and im taking the following IB subjects:

Economics HL-7
Mathematics (differential option) HL-6
Physics HL-7
Chemistry SL-6
English Lang. and Lit. SL-6
Spanish AB initio SL-7

When i say my GPA is 4.0 its not officially 4.0 but my councellor told me that considering my IB points (listed above) i should expect a GPA of something like 4.

Also, my SAT scores are terrible.

1830- 630(reading), 650 ( maths), 550 ( Writing).

SAT 2 subject tests: 650 Maths 2C
740 Physics.

Im thinking of not giving my SAT 2 scores as i believe my maths scores are pathetic. I dont know how i got so low, I was expecting like 780+ in it.

Also, im giving my SAT 1 for the 3rd and final time now and expect to get atleast 2150 or more. Ive been scoring around 670, 780, 760 for CR, Maths and Writing respectively in my recent princeton review Diagnostic tests as well as the actual SAT past papers.

Also, I dont wanna list all my ECs here as the list is seriously too long but all you need to know is that my ECs are amazing.

My teacher LORs are also phenomenal. My teachers love me.

I also believe that im gonna right fairly decent and creative essays but not so sure about that.

I also wanted to know that if im giving my SAT in November will i still be considered for EA and will it affect my chances? I dont wanna give only my old scores for consideration

Do you have any hooks? That is, minority, development, athletic, or FGCS status. If so, perhaps it won’t matter too much. If not, your SATs are definitely not a selling point, but given an otherwise strong profile, I think your chances are still fine. What is the average SAT like from your school? Do you come from a less privileged area and high school? All these things come into factor, and you need to further explain your situation.

My advice is to just worry about your application and the SATs at this point. If you can nail those, you have a good shot.

Thanks.

Im a pretty good golfer. I can get a recomendation letter from the golf teacher who himself is quite renowned. Ive also won some golf course tournaments but they arent worth much.

Also, Im an Indian(from the subcontinent) so dont know if Indians are considered a minority or no.

Other than that my family has an income of around $38K annual and I go to school only because of a lot of financial aid.

And the average SAT from my school is quite low.

In the October exams only 3 people scored more than 2000 points in a class of 200 something.

Hmmm. Well, Chicago is an NCAA Division 3 school which means it doesn’t offer athletic scholarships to recruited athletes and, in general, doesn’t emphasize athletic recruiting. That said, athletes can be flagged/tipped for admission, which means the coaches will vet for your acceptance if they think you can contribute to the golf team and your academics are of Chicago-standard (which they seem to be, besides the SAT). If you’re a senior, it may be a bit late to contact Chicago’s golf coach about being recruited, but it may be worth a shot anyways. Email him if you think you are good enough.

Being Indian means you’re a minority, yes, but not an underrepresented minority (URM as they’re referred to on this site). Some people conspire that being Indian/Asian hurts your chances, but I tend to disagree. Regardless, your race won’t help you. Your income status will be considered in the decision and given your family’s annual income and the personal obstacles you have likely faced as a result, your income-level could be an advantage. Do your parents hold bachelor’s degrees? If not, that will also be (a pretty big) hook.

Your school’s low SAT score average and personal background make for a good defense of lower-than-average SATs, but that isn’t an excuse for those scores being low. Regardless, I wouldn’t worry too much about the standardized testing because you have an otherwise strong profile, but know that you could do with better SATs. So, really focus on doing well this semester, writing amazing essays and doing well on your retakes.

Um… how did you get your IB scores already? Are they just predicted? If so, then I think your school is marking easy, because there is no way you’d be getting a 6 in HL math and only scoring 650 on SAT I math. I’m taking math studies and I got a higher mark than that…
If it is the result of grade inflation, I’m sure UChicago will be able to see that. You need to get a higher SAT mark in order for UChicago to take your predicted grades more seriously. Think logically. A 6 in HL Math would not equate to a mere 650. The high predicted marks in this case would not work in your favor, as it makes your school’s grading less credible

Yeah its predicted grades.

I know the sat score is really low but I had a bad test day.

What if my semester and interim scores for Maths HL are 6 too? Those arent predicted, those you need to earn.

Im still giving it again in november and i hope to score more this time.
