Recently i was told that UF is a very tough school to get into, I am a FL resident, but i have lived abroad almost my whole life. I am a senior, and I was interested in applying as early as possible. I did the SAT May 3rd, and got a 1680 (620 in math/500 reading/560 writing) I know my english scores are not so good, I will try and take it again on September. I am also taking the ACT this saturday. My GPA (for my entire HS years) is 4.2/5 (i think it is a 3.2/4). Even though i don't play many sports i form part of the school play and i have been a part of a nacional dance team for 2 years. I also have various hours in community service (a few church hours and 80 hours of school community service), I have attended a few leadership seminars. I speak 3 languages (Spanish, English and Portuguese). Anyways, I just wanted to know where i stand.

Hi Catria, thank you for your reply. I was wondering if you could provide me with some tips or info on how to improve my chances of getting in. As i said before, I am a senior. My school year started in march and ends in december. I am currently 6 months away from graduating. Thanks

All I can really give you is a target score for Saturday and, although it might seem a little high at first glance, 28+/1950+ will move UF out of “reach” territory.

Best thing you can do is improve your test scores, keep your GPA high and work on your EC’s.

UF uses holistic admissions, with around 50% being GPA/Test scores and Class rigor, the other 50% are EC’s, leadership, etc.

Look for any leadership chances, even a small project with your church would be helpful. Also, work on your essay this summer, as it is important. It looks like you’re still studying outside of the country? If so, your admission will following the international student process (even if you are counted as “in-state” for tuition, etc).

Make sure you meet all international admission requirements.

Finally, make sure you apply to a few “safety” schools, incase you don’t get accepted to UF.

Good Luck!

EDIT: One last thing, if you can visit UF, do so and make sure you mention it in your app. UF will view a campus visit as “showing interest”, it’s a minor thing, but every little bit helps. Also, make an effort to call and talk with someone in admissions, to get all of your questions answered.

@gator88ne Off topic question: Does UF count DE as a core class when they recalc your gpa? Like I know they count DE classes like Biology an survey of calc, but what about classes like music app and art history?

@tandrew DE almost always counted as core classes. So you would count Music App and Art History. Give +1.0 points to DE/IB/AICE/AP classes (so an A is worth 5.0 points), and +0.5 points to honor or gifted classes (or pre-AICE, pre-IB classes).
