So i'm applying to UCLA in the coming week for fall '11 as a psych major. I don't have a lot of classes completed but i planned out my courses so that id meet all the requirements by the time I would get in. I attended 2 different colleges prior to the 2 im attending right now and with pretty poor GPAs in both of them. I moved down to LA for a fresh start and my GPAs are looking better at these new ccs's. Will these old colleges have a big impact on my chances of getting admitted? Since I dont have many classes completed, the ones that are completed have the biggest impact on my current GPA which is probably around 3.0 right now. I'm confident that I can raise that to at least the minimum eligibility by Spring. The one thing i do have going for me is my essay. Its about the unfortunate death of my father and the hardships I had to overcome being the oldest child. Also should I explain the reason for the college switches in my essay or in additional comments? Should I even mention these other colleges? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

hmmm, to be honest your gpa is pretty low for UCLA. Hopefully this semester you are taking a lot of units and can pull of a 4.0 to bump it up. But, I don’t think it’ll be enough. Plus you didn’t say if that gpa included your grades from your prior colleges inwich you did poorly. If you gave units from each school and their gpa’s it would be easier to evaluate.

Just so you know, most accepted psych majors are 3.6+ with TAP.

You need at least a 3.6 (with a TAP). If you don’t do TAP, you should aim for a 3.9 GPA. If not, you won’t get in. Even if you found a cure for cancer, you won’t get into UCLA with a low GPA… Yep, its that important
