Personal:
I am male. I am an ABC (American-born Chinese)

Grades:
My grades show an upward curve. I go from A's and B's in freshman year to all A's in junior year (3 AP classes in junior year). Right now, I am taking 5 AP classes.

In the top 10%.

Tests:
SAT: 2100 (I retook these. New scores come out soon. Positive I did a lot better)
SAT II: Math I - 800, Math II - 800, Chemistry - 760, Chinese - 770
AP's: Chemistry - 5, Chinese - 5

Notable Extracirriculars: (I am leaving out things such as sports, math team, etc. for the sake of your time)

Class President for Junior and Senior year

Piano
-I have won mulitple competitions
-I have some recordings I can send in
-Pianist of two Youth Symphony orchestras for 2 years
-Have played 3 solo concerts (concerts where the only performer is me)

Journalist
-Have traveled to many countries and have wrote and published articles documenting my experiences

I have really only given you what I think are my unique aspects. Let me know if I need to give more information.

You are a competitive applicant. However, there are weaknesses in your test scores and lack of significant honors/awards. If you are posting a chance thread, you should post your extracurricular activities that the school will be informed about; otherwise, the whole exercise is moot, if it isn’t futile enough already. The journalism aspect is interesting. Musical talent will probably not be a significant boost.

I am SO sorry if this is racist or whatever, but I find it funny that he, a Chinese guy, got an 800 in SAT math but only 770 in Chinese, in his own language. I know it feeds into the “Asians are good in math” stereotype but I had to mention it.

Sorry. Didn’t mean to sound offensive. I know my “original” language. Granted, I wasn’t born in America so I guess it’s different but this makes me wonder… if someone doesn’t know their “original” language, does it look bad in admissions?

Of course. If my parents make a decision not to teach me the language of a country I wasn’t born in, I don’t see why I should deserve to go to college at all.

yeah, my chinese is bad. i studied it independently as my foreign language in high school. so i’m hoping it’s treated as a “foreign” language for me, when they are considering my app, even though i am chinese. (i put english as my first language in the common app; hopefully that helps).

alright, so you guys said my SAT I scores were low. well, i just got the scores back from my retake. i ended up getting 800 on the writing section, after getting 670 on it last time. that brought my total score to 2240.

theres so many ■■■■■■ on this site that its killing my heart for you to think that this is the “reality”
not it is not “close to zero.” readerman’s just being the absolute ■■■■■ (you can look at his posts)

I believe the strongest point would be your journalism, from what I see, and your presidency. Harvard looks for largely leadership qualities, as I can tell you that from my brother’s acceptance to Harvard a few years back. If you distinguish yourself well, you definitely can get in. Always hope for the best, and wish you the best of luck (:

Test scores, class rank, grades are a tad bit low, but don’t let this discourage you. It seems like you’ve done pretty well in music, so maybe send in an arts supplement? Don’t harp on it too much though, because tons of applicants have music experience. Above all, I’d push the journalism aspect, it’s totally unique. I think you have a decent chance if you have stellar essays, but your guess is as good as mine.
