What are my chances

I really like Wesleyan University, but I don't know if I can get in.

I am a Caucasian female junior at a nationally recognized public school in New Jersey. My highest ACT score is 32 and my SAT score is 1890 without superscoring and 1910 with it. I am taking 1 AP class this year and 2 next year. I am also taking SAT IIs in Math I, Chemistry, and Literature. My GPA is not as high as it could be. It is a 3.6 because I did not do great last year, but I have worked harder this year. Despite a harder course load and the normal stresses of junior year my GPA for this year only is a 3.8 or 3.9. I have earned a varsity letter sophomore and junior year. I am a soccer referee for young children and I am an EMT.

What do you think my chances are?

I would say that Wesleyan would be a reach for you, but I have a few recommendations.

First, unless you can boost your SATs to 2150 to 2200, I would suggest you do not submit them and only send your ACT (with Writing), although I would suggest that you retake that as well, with the goal of getting a 33 or 34.

Your GPA is a bit lower than Wesleyan might like to see, but it is not out of the question.

I would absolutely recommend that you interview this summer or in the early fall (when students are back on campus) and that you strongly consider applying Early Decision. Almost 52% of this year’s admits to the Class of 2015 were admitted Early Decision, and I would think if you went in as a regular decision candidate you would likely be denied.

As you must know, GPA and SAT/ACT scores are not at all the whole basis on how Wes looks at students. Your extra-curriculars, your recommendations and your essay–along with the interview–all weigh in significantly. If there is a reason for your GPA, the interview is a good time to talk about it. The good news is that you are steadily improving it.

Another suggestion, since what you have presented on ECs is pretty limited, having some type of special summer activity that really distinguishes you would be helpful.

Make sure your recos, your ECs and your essay complement each other to present you as someone special in some particular area. What is your passion? Make sure it jumps out from your application when it is read as a whole.

Good luck!
