What are my Chances???

I am an Asian Indian who goes to a fairly new but competitive high school. I am most likely going to major in Computer Science (Engineering)
What are my chances for:
-Stanford
-MIT
-UCLA (My brother currently attends here :D )
-UC Berkeley
-Cal Poly Pomona
-UCSD
-UCSB
-UCI
-Carnegie Mellon
-Harvey Mudd
-University of Illinois
-Georgia Tech
-Caltech

Here are my stats.

Weighted GPA: 4.44
Un-weighted GPA: 3.833
Class Rank: Top 2%

SAT Score: 1900, retook it and looking at around a 2000-2100.
SAT IIs (Score): Math II (720), US History (730), Chemistry (700)

AP Courses (Score): World History (3), Calc AB (4), Calc BC (5), Chemistry (5), US History (5), Language & Comp. (4), Statistics, Literature, Physics, Psychology, Gov/Econ, Computer Science A (Self-Study)

Expected Score
*Senior Year Course

Extra-Curriculars (Time): Programming (1 year, beginner in Python, C++, and starting Java), Guitar (5+ years, played multiple live concerts), Varsity Tennis (4 years, Captain Junior and Senior years), JV Basketball (1 year) CSF (4 years, lifetime member), Key Club (2 years), Boys State California Runner-Up (Corona/Norco area), Numerous local volunteer opportunities...

I'm also looking to do some programming this summer and try to get my own official i-phone app up on the app store...maybe even a few.

Chances? Thanks.

Bumppppp…

Your scores are quite low. Your GPA is low but if you are in top 2%, that may compensate.

Thanks texaspg, i appreciate the reply and the honesty. Any recommendations on what i can do to be a match for Stanford? I really want to attend there.

Bump! Bump!

-Caltech- HIGH reach

Your SAT is very low for Standford, MIT, and Caltech. You’ll want a 2300+ for those with your GPA and ECs. But if you really love those schools, you should apply anyway.

Thanks born2dance, ill probably narrow that list down a bit before i apply but im definitely going to apply to some of the tougher colleges, even if i have a slim chance. Who knows how lucky i might get? :P

BTW, i forgot to put it in the original post but, that SAT score is from my first attempt. I just took it for the second time and can say with confidence that i got above a 2000.

Thanks Anonymous, i appreciate your response.

Most of the schools you are applying to have a baseline 2200 score and so raising it to 2000-2100 may not improve it much.

Have you tried ACT to see if you can do better?

Not sure about ECs. Nothing stands out that gets you in for your reaches. CS at CMU is very tough to get into since it is considered one of the best if not the best. Stanford is highly unpredictable for people with the most perfect resumes and so no one can truly advise you how to get in. However, if you can get in there, you are probably getting into everything else since you would be considered really good based on whatever.

I’m working on that SAT score for sure. I’m near that 2200 range on most of my practice tests and now i just need to translate that to the real test. As far as the ECs are concerned, i agree, i have not done much in that aspect of my application. As i said before, i am going to develop a few i-phone applications over the summer and hopefully one of them has success. I feel as though having a successful i-phone app up on the app store would definitely help my application, being as i am going to major in CS. Thanks for the feedback though texaspg.

And i am taking the ACT this saturday  hoping for the best!

Bump! Bump!

i hope you are in state for the California schools, that will help

Your sat scores are on the low side for Stanford and MIT, i would definitely work on getting those up at least above 2100 for consideration by such selective schools.
Also, I’m not trying to stereotype here in any way, but your interest in computer programming and science tends to be typical of asian american applicants. I would make sure you demonstrate the fact that you are a well rounded and well prepared applicant (which seems to be the case, as you are involved in various extracurricular activities). Just make sure this comes across to adcoms.

Thanks bluekangaroo! Yes, im familiar with that stereotype, haha :stuck_out_tongue: and Im working on that SAT, trying to get it to a 2200+

Bump 10 char.

Bump 10 char.

How is his GPA low? I’ve seen people get into Princeton with a 3.8.
