I am applying to U of I Urbana Champaign, and I got an email saying my decesion would be posted on Friday! That got me really nervous so I could you please tell me if I should "brace myself" for the worst?

My Stats:

Applying for Animal Sciences major
SAT score: 2030
Subject test: 700
High school GPA: 3.4 UW not counting senior year (I'll explain this in a bit)
I attend one of the most competitive schools in California, and it is in the top 100 competitive schools in America.
3 APs
Essays were really great
I'm on my school's swim, and cross country team. I also have completed 3 Years worth of internship, one was an interactive internship at a Vets office and I got a glowing recommendation from her :) I'm in my schools literary club, and I have numerous volunteer activities. I got an award for my volunteering, a top intern award, and in freshman year I won a national essay competition.

Also Im a bit of a special case because I have a medical condition which prevents me from working well during tests and things. This condition got worse after freshman year made my sophomore year awful I got like a 3.0 because of it, so I went to the school and they were really helpful and gave me a 504 plan. The accommodations helped me raise my GPA to a 3.5, and in senior year a 3.7.

I explained this in my application, so I hope it will help salve the gaping hole of my GPA in my application :0

I hate to say it but I don’t think you’ll be directly admitted to animal sciences (it’s simply too competitive of a program). However I do think you’ll be admitted to DGS and then hopefully you can transfer. You have good stats overall. I’m glad to hear your essays were excellent - that goes a long way to admission. Your unique situation with your 504 plan will probably be the unique hook you need that will help you gain admission.

Yes, all applicants put into consideration for DGS if not admitted to their original program.
I was just curious on the personal side, if you have a condition that affects your academic abilities, will it affect you in college too? Will you have a form of treatment by then?
Best of luck as always!

Are you guys saying if one isn’t admitted to his or her intended area of study, he or she will go into DGS and might admitted for DGS? So what will happen to these people? Will they be able to choose their majors once enrolled?

DGS is like a waiting station. U of I offers students the opportunity to be admitted into the university through DGS rather than be denied completely. Supposedly every student who is not admitted to their original program is automatically considered for DGS. You cannot graduate with a degree in Department of General Studies so they need to fit all the students in other programs sometime. Many students transfer out of DGS after their first year but definitely all after their second year. The most difficult ones (if not impossible) ones to transfer into are engineering and business. I think it would be a mistake to enter DGS and assume that you’d be able to transfer into either program. I don’t know a heck of a lot about Animal Sciences so maybe someone else can tell you how competitive that is.

How competitive is the animal science major? Like do I have a shot at it with my stats?

@ IeatKids It won’t effect my college as I don’t have like a mental problem, I just get sick often, and my 504 plan extends to college so I will be fine. Good luck to you too!
