I was rejected at the only school I applied to which was a huge downfall for me and I was extremely frustrated and upset. After a couple of days I realized how competitive these schools are. I am doing rolling admission at several schools. I am applying to forman, ethel walker, the gunnery, hyde, cushing, macduffie, millbrook, pomfret, cheshire, and st andrews. I am on varsity lacrosse, swimming, field hockey and cheerleading. I have a lot of community service and I work and also coach two of those sports. I dont have good grades at all. I am taking the SSAT's again and hoping to get very good scores. I have personal problems at my current school which has been a huge downfall in my grades. I am applying as a repeat sophomore also. I also do photography and videography. my classes are: algebra, jewelry, biology, wellness 10, spanish 1(was in french 3 last year I just switched), english 10, and american government. My teachers all really like me. What do you think my chances are?

You’ll do best if you you focus on schools where your grades and SSAT scores are above the norm for the school, rather than below the norm. At the very least, they should be competitive. I would also recommend looking at some of the other girls’ schools.

What you don’t mention (and I’m not going back to check your old posts) is whether or not you need financial aid. The reality is that if you’re full pay, you’ll be able to get in somewhere . . . and if you’re not, it’s going to be a lot more difficult.

grades,grades,grades… really imp. i guess
becoz all the other kids you are competing against will be having all that YOU have AND good grades. otherwise you have a fine chance.

I know grades are so important. I am full pay which is a huge plus but I am going to try and explain my situation to each and every school. I am smart I have had problems of my own at my current school. I also am extremely into lacrosse. I have tons of letters from colleges asking to come to the schools etc. Any advice or schools I should or shouldn’t apply to? Thanks so much! I am looking at Emma Willard they called my home asking if I could tour the school.

Bump!!!

If Emma Willard has places left and they want u to visit the campus, then go visit.

Schools really want to see demonstrated achievement, and the maturity to overcome difficulties. I don’t know what sort of problems you’ve had, and whether or not the circumstances have been under your control. But - be very careful how you discuss this. The schools DO NOT want a kid with a “victim mentality” . . . (“it’s not my fault, I couldn’t help it, etc.”).

Take responsibility for whatever has been happening, show that you understand what happened, and have a plan to keep it from happening again. Show that you’ve grown and learned from your experiences. Everyone makes mistakes - the key is to show that you’ve grown and learned something valuable as a result.

Good luck!

I didn’t do something bad. I didnt get kicked out or anything I just dont like my school and the school atmosphere and not been right for me.

I didn’t think that was the case. But you said that you had some sort of “problem” that contributed to your poor grades.

Can you show the schools that you have the maturity to make the most of a bad situation? That no matter what life throws at you, you can persevere and rise above?

Even at great boarding schools like you’re trying to attend, things are not always “perfect.” The schools want to enroll kids with maturity and resilience. I know you play lacrosse - what happens if you get hurt and have to sit out a season? Do you have the “personal fortitude” to make the best of that and still excel in school?

“Maturity” is really measured by how well you respond to adversity - and you WILL encounter adversity wherever you end up going to school, even at a great boarding school.

Thank you so much and in my applications and essays and for my interviews coming I explained straight forward my bad grades and I did say how I made the best of my years and the situations and I’m willing to accept it and move on and grow. I understand that you could get hurt but I also play field hockey and ice hockey but academics is the reason I am trying to go to boarding school. Thanks for your help!
